Andor Reveals Why Bix Isn't In Rogue One — And Adria Arjona Says It Was One Of Her 'Scariest Days On Set, Ever'
The following contains spoilers from Season 2, Episode 9 of Andor, now streaming on Disney+.
With just three episodes now left to air, Andor on Tuesday night answered one burning question related to the main characters conspicuously absent from the Rogue One: A Star Wars Story film that the Disney+ series is leading up to.
In Season 2, Episode 9, titled "Welcome to the Rebellion," Cassian (played by Diego Luna) reunites with Bix (Adria Arjona) after the Ghorman Massacre, and the two cozily make camp on Yavin. Cassian worries aloud that hhe has been lucky thus far, and said good fortune is bound to run out soon. So he is prepared to get out of the rebel fight and enjoy a chill "happily ever after" with his lady.
Bix, though, was told by a Force healer who'd assessed her partner that Cassian appears to be a "messenger" of great importance. So, Cassian wakes up the next morning to find Bix's side of the bed empty, and a QuickTime video awaiting him:
I have to leave. I have to go away. I'm not sure where, or for how long. I just know that I can't stay here with you now. I believe what you said, it is a choice, It just can't be me. I can't be the reason you leave here. If you were to give this up for me... I'd never forgive myself. We have to win. We have to beat them. And I believe you have a purpose in making that happen. So I'm choosing for the both of us. I'm choosing the rebellion.... And when it's done, when it's over and we have won, we can do all the things we ever wanted. I'll find you.
Speaking with TVLine, Adria Arjona said that series creator Tony Gilroy had given her a generous heads-up about Bix's fate, rather than spring it on her with that Episode 9 script.
"The beauty of Tony Gilroy is that he believes infromation is power, and he believes in informing his actors early on," the actress shared.
"So before [Dan Gilroy] even wrote that speech, I remember [Tony] called me and sort of warned me about what was going to happen," she continued. As a result, Arjona was able to live with that knowledge and best steel herself for Bix's swan song — even when in the midst of playing an entirely different role.
"I was filming something very different — I was in the middle of [the Netflix action comedy] Hit Man — and I was lingering on the idea of Bix and what was going to happen to her...," she recalls. "So by the time that you read it, there's a connectivity that is really interesting."
When it came time to actually film Bix's good-bye, Arjona knew the pressure was on to deliver a compelling, moving reason for her character's exit from Cassian's orbit, and in turn her absence from Rogue One.
"That speech.... if anything, I was so scared of it," Arjona admitted. "I knew the importance of that speech, not only for Rogue One but for the journey of Cassian, for the journey of their relationship, and for Bix's sake. It's something I didn't take lightly."
In fact, "It was probably one of my scariest days on set, ever. Ever."
