Doctor Who Duo Steers You To The New Season's Funniest, Scariest, Saddest Episodes — And 3 Big Scene Stealers

What's new with Doctor Who?

For one, Fifteen (played by Ncuti Gatwa) will quickly acquire a new companion, Belinda Chandra, when Season 15 launches Saturday, April 12. The TARDIS' latest houseguest is played by Andor's Varada Sethu, who in last season's "Boom" episode appeared as Ordained Anglican Marine Mundy Flynn — a descendant of Belinda's.

What sets Belinda apart from the many companions who came before her?

For one, "She wants to get home" to Earth, showrunner Russell T Davies tells TVLine. But for mysterious/haunting reasons to be revealed in the season opener, that is easier said than done.

Belinda is also an actual nurse, setting the stage for the fun "doctor/"nurse" exchange seen in trailers, but also giving this companion a seen-it-all past of her own.

"She works in the emergency department, so she has seen some stuff," Davies says. "She's exhausted — it's hard work — but she is very clear-eyed as a result." As such, "she very quickly realizes that if you travel in the TARDIS with the Doctor, you get a laser beam pointed at your head every time you step out of that door. You get explosions, you get enemies... you get a living cartoon played by Alan Cumming, trying to kill you!"

Though Belinda comes with said sensible attitude, she is not here to harsh Fifteen's mellow. "There'd be nothing worse than a companion always complaining like a kid in car saying, 'Are we there yet?!" notes Davies. So Belinda's attitude is "balanced with the fact that she adores the Doctor very quickly, and she realizes that she's seeing things she'll never get to see again" — including a Florida hot spot.

"Forget about alien planets and flashing through history. She's never been to Miami!" says Davies. So for her to do so in the second episode, titled "Lux," is "brilliant for her. Until then she realizes its Miami in 1952, which is a whole different matter."
