High Potential Boss Reveals Fun Story Behind The Use Of New Order's 'Bizarre Love Triangle' In Episode 2

After just two episodes, High Potential is already living rent-free in our heads this season, thanks to a pair of earworms courtesy of DJ Game Master.

The Sept. 16 premiere featured The Tokens' "The Lion Sleeps Tonight," which Matthew (guest star David Giuntoli) played to lure Morgan towards an important clue in solving his deadly puzzle. The doo-wop classic played again when Matthew crashed the LAPD precinct at the end of the hour, ensuring that it would be stuck in our heads all week — and it was.

But that was nothing compared to the song heavily featured in the second episode of the season, New Order's "Bizarre Love Triangle." The new wave track was once again employed by Matthew to guide Morgan to a crucial missing person, after he initially referenced it during a tense encounter with Morgan earlier in the episode.

For good measure, a stripped-down cover of "Bizarre Love Triangle" by Priscilla Ahn also played towards the end of the episode as Morgan got to breathe a well-deserved sigh of relief, knowing the kidnapping victim was finally safe.

So, who do we have to thank for getting this song stuck in our heads? The song choice was apparently a collaborative effort between showrunner Todd Harthan and director James Roday Rodriguez, who have been close friends since high school.

"We were '80s and early '90s kids, and we always loved anything New Order, The Cure, Depeche Mode — that was our jam," Harthan tells TVLine. "We were those kids, and for some reason that particular song was just one that he and I, when we became friends in 1992, just loved. It seemed to fit into this episode, and we were willing to pay a premium to get it."

(Fun reminder: Roday Rodriguez also co-starred alongside Giuntoli on ABC's A Million Little Things, making this episode a reunion both in front of and behind the camera.)
