9-1-1: Lone Star EP Breaks Down Iris' Return, Owen's Dangerous New Path And More In Season 4 Premiere

9-1-1: Lone Star returned for its fourth season on Tuesday, bringing plenty of emotional upheaval — and the occasional airborne porta potty — for the 126.

Let's begin with the literal frognado that put Tommy in the path of her next potential love interest, a single father named Trevor (played by Gina Torres' former Suits co-star D.B. Woodside). After multiple run-ins, she finally gathered the courage to give him her number... only to discover on Sunday morning that he's the new pastor at her church! ("I think I made a pass at my pastor.")

Elsewhere, Owen had the misfortune of discovering that his new motorcycle buddies are actually neo-Nazis. He had every intention of kicking his friends to the curb, until an FBI agent (played by Amanda Schull, another Suits vet!) showed up at his door with an offer we doubt he'll be able to refuse.

And then there's #Tarlos. The perfect venue opened up for the grooms-to-be, but there's a catch: the whole wedding needs to come together in eight weeks. Actually, there's another catch: Carlos is already married! It turns out he swapped vows with Michelle's sister Iris (Lyndsy Fonseca) in the name of getting her better healthcare. Fortunately, she's now doing much better, and she gave Carlos her blessing to divorce her and marry T.K.

Read on for showrunner Tim Minear's thoughts on some of the premiere's biggest surprises, then drop a comment with your hopes for the rest of Season 4.

Owen the Informant

Even though "Owen sort of did this semi-undercover thing exposing the serial arsonist" a few seasons ago, Minear says that his new working relationship with the FBI "takes us into a different corner of our universe."

"Amanda Schull is tremendous," Minear adds. "She is such a great addition. I love her chemistry with Rob Lowe. They more fight than flirt, but it's really great."

As for Owen's previous relationship, we learned in the premiere that Catherine has taken a new job in Washington, D.C. But that doesn't mean it's over for them.

"We may see Catherine again," Minear says. "She's pursuing her own ambitions right now. But the actress who plays Catherine, Amy Acker, is still around. She's been shadowing our directors because she's looking to get into directing. So we're trying to facilitate that."

#Tarlos' Blast From the Past

In crafting Iris' return to the fold, Minear "wanted to come up with something that felt like it was a new layer, or a piece of Carlos' past we hadn't yet explored."

As for why Carlos' wife ended up being Iris, Minear explains, "You get into a fourth season of a show and you discover that you've been incrementally building a universe. When we were fishing around for an interesting way to explore the run-up to the wedding, it just occurred to me. And let's be honest, Lyndsy is fantastic. I knew we had gold with her. In my mind, it was always that Iris and Carlos had a preexisting relationship of some kind, which is why he bonded with Michelle after her disappearance. It felt organic. It didn't feel fake at all."

But does Iris' return mean we can also hope to see big sis Michelle (aka Live Tyler) someday? "We always have that hope," Minear says. "Liv would have been fantastic in this [storyline], it just didn't work out that way."

Tommy's Crisis of Faith

Tommy and Trevor obviously have great chemistry (click here to read Torres' thoughts on their reunion), but is she ready to date a man of the cloth?

"I think it's a really interesting conundrum for her," Minear says. "I'm sure we're not the first show to do it, but it puts certain guardrails on their relationship, which turns out to be a challenge for Tommy and for him. There's also something incredibly sweet and wholesome about the whole thing. It's too adorable."

Judd and Grace's Family Reunion

Now to discuss some characters we didn't spend much time with in the premiere — the Ryders!

After welcoming a new baby girl (and a new teenage son) last season, "we're going to meet more of Grace's extended family," Minear says. "We'll also continue to explore Judd's extended family."

Fingers crossed that Judd doesn't have any more surprise kids out there!

Detective Strickland

And what of Paul, you ask?

It turns out that Mr. Strickland is "going to have a little bit of a romance coming up" this season, according to Minear. "We'll also return to Paul as Sherlock Holmes, which is always fun."

Bonus #Tarlos Scoop!

The wedding isn't the only thing fans of Carlos and T.K. (especially the former) have to look forward to this season.

"We haven't shot the actual wedding yet, but the build-up to it has been great," Minear says. "In these first four episodes, Rafael Silva is just outstanding. When you see Episode 4, you'll know exactly what I mean. He's just tremendous."

As for the wedding, "when we finally get to it, we'll definitely put it on screen," Minear promises. "It'll definitely be on camera. They won't elope to Mexico behind our backs."
