9-1-1 Season 9 Trailer Reveals Why Athena And Hen Are Going To Space — Here's Everything We Know
Why settle for jumping the shark when you can fly over the shark in a literal rocket ship? That's right, friends, 9-1-1 is going to outer space.
Specifically, Athena (Angela Bassett) and Hen (Aisha Hinds) will be blasting off, as seen in the official trailer for the ABC procedural's forthcoming ninth season.
As revealed in the trailer, their trip is a thank-you gift for saving an eccentric billionaire (played by Riverdale's Mark Consuelos). Hen initially tries to bring her wife, an actual rocket scientist, along for the ride, but Karen (Tracie Thoms) turns down the opportunity because she's a "serious scientist," which Consuelos' character is decidedly not — hence him sending them into space in the middle of a geomagnetic storm. Um, Houston? We have several problems.

Prior to this footage, ABC previously released a Season 9 teaser hinting at a crisis from above. That promo begins with Buck asking, "What the heck is that?" as flaming objects fall from the sky around him. As Alex Warren's "Ordinary" swells in the background, Maddie (Jennifer Love Hewitt) mutters, "Oh my God," followed by an order to "take cover" from Eddie (Ryan Guzman).
The drama crescendos with Chimney shouting, "118, brace for impact!" as the camera zooms out to reveal more objects barreling towards Earth from outer space. At the time, many fans wondered why Athena and Hen were missing from the promo, and now we know — it's because they're in space!

Season 8 marked a major turning point for the show, with the death of Captain Bobby Nash (played by Peter Krause) thrusting the firehouse into uncharted, uncertain territory. With the pain of his loss still fresh, along with the myriad changes that follow such an unexpected event, fans are eager to see how the 118 will navigate this strange new world in Season 9.
Aside from Krause, however, the show's entire roster of series regulars is expected back for Season 9, including Bassett as Athena Grant, Stark as Evan "Buck" Buckley, Hinds as Hen Wilson, Choi as Chimney Han, Hewitt as Maddie Han, Guzman as Eddie Diaz and Gavin McHugh as Christopher Diaz. (In fact, that's not all!)
So, what other drama awaits the 118? Read on for a complete breakdown of everything we know about 9-1-1 Season 9 so far, then drop a comment with your own hopes for the show's return this fall.
9-1-1 Casts Mark Consuelos as Billionaire (Who Gets Swallowed by a Whale)
If Mark Consuelos thought life in Riverdale was wild, just wait until he finds out what awaits him in the world of 9-1-1. Consuelos will guest-star in a Season 9 episode as a "Musk-ish, Bezos-ish billionaire who was swallowed by a whale, and a much larger adventure will ensue from that," showrunner Tim Minear tells EW. Like so many seemingly impossible crises facing the 118, this particular incident was very much ripped from the headlines, inspired by a recent viral video. "Just google 'kayaker gets swallowed by whale,'" Minear adds. "You'll find it." (No need, we've got you covered.)
9-1-1 Promotes Corinne Massiah and Elijah M. Cooper to Series Regulars
ABC announced via social media on Aug. 13 that Corinne Massiah (aka May Grant) and Elijah M. Cooper (Harry Grant) have been promoted to series regulars for Season 9.
Massiah was previously a series regular for Seasons 2 through 6, while this promotion marks Cooper's first time in the position. Marcanthonee Jon Reis, the actor who portrayed Harry before Cooper took over, was also a series regular for Seasons 2 through 6.
When Does 9-1-1 Season 9 Premiere?
The Season 9 premiere of 9-1-1 will air Thursday, Oct. 9 at 8/7c on ABC. It will be followed by the series premiere of 9-1-1: Nashville at 9 pm, then the Season 22 premiere of Grey's Anatomy at 10 pm.
(The premiere was originally set for Oct. 16, but ABC bumped it up a week.)
Where Is 9-1-1 Season 9 Filming?
Ryan Guzman had 9-1-1 fans concerned in May when he posted a farewell story to Instagram, fueling speculation that Eddie's time on the show was coming to an end.
"Well, it officially happened," Guzman said. "It's the last day on this lot. Stage 6, I'll miss ya. Seven years. That's crazy."
But this turned out to be much ado about nothing. Guzman was merely saying goodbye to the Fox lot, where 9-1-1 has filmed since it premiered in 2018; the show is relocating to Burbank for Season 9.
Production on the show's ninth season officially began in late July.
Season 9 Will Introduce the 118's New Captain
Following Bobby's untimely demise, the 118 is in serious need of new leadership. Hen was the logical first choice, but when she turned down the promotion, the fandom's collective attention shifted to Chimney, whose inspiring finale speech all but guaranteed him the gig.
Athena Is Moving Out... and On?
If you were hoping to spend more time in the home that Bobby and Athena built, you're out of luck. Despite initially balking at the idea, Athena ultimately put the house up for sale in the Season 8 finale, leaving curious fans to wonder where she'll be putting down roots next. And could Athena's major life changes also apply to her career? Only time will tell.
According to Minear, we'll know much more about Athena's future by the end of Season 9, Episode 3. (Just please tell us she isn't staying in space.)
Is Chimney Going Blonde in Season 9?
Sadly, no. While some of the actors' hiatus looks have made their way onto the screen (remember when Eddie got that sick mustache, courtesy of Ryan Guzman?), Kenneth Choi's blonde hair won't be one of them. He posted an Instagram video on July 23, revealing that he's reverted back to classic Chimney mode.
