American Idol's Top 3 Revealed: Who Will Compete In The Season 20 Finale?
The stage is officially set for next week's American Idol finale, following Sunday's elimination of two more finalists. Or as Ryan Seacrest dubbed it, "a massive night in Idol history."
The penultimate episode of Season 20 gave the five remaining singers — Fritz Hager, HunterGirl, Leah Marlene, Nicolina and Noah Thompson — their last chance to earn America's approval before the final votes are cast next week.
And who better to prepare them for what's to come than Season 4 Idol winner Carrie Underwood? The top five traveled to Vegas, where Underwood currently has a residency at Resorts World Theatre, for some last-minute mentoring. Finneas also made a special appearance on Sunday's Idol, performing his new single "Naked."
Read on for a breakdown of Sunday's performances and results (with official video added when available), then drop a comment with your thoughts on the final three contestants. Who do you expect to win next week? Were the right two singers booted from the competition?
SAFE: HunterGirl
HunterGirl was the first to crack open Underwood's songbook on Sunday, performing "Undo It." Her biggest challenge? Bringing the sass while maintaining the solid vocals we've come to expect, according to Underwood, who happily made herself available for strut lessons. And HunterGirl turned out to be the perfect student, turning out "exactly" what she was told to do. Lionel Richie marveled at her ability to command the stage, while Perry reiterated what we've all known since Day 1 — vocally, HunterGirl is already a star.
She returned to the stage with her take on Little Big Town's "Girl Crush," reinforcing the viewers' collective music crush on her. She's polished and professional, but not in a boring way. She just puts so much herself into these performances, and I can feel how much she wants this. When she blasted us with those high notes on "bottle of her perfume," I felt that. (I'm clearly with the judges at this point. Tonight is just a love fest. Why do any of them have to go?!) Click here to watch.
SAFE: Noah Thompson
Though quarantine kept Thompson from meeting Underwood in person, the Idol legend was still able to work her magic on Thompson's performance of "So Small," an emotional ballad that brought out the best in Thompson's voice. No one can say he wasn't 100-percent connected to this one. I have to admit, Thompson never really did it for me earlier in the competition... but after tonight? I totally get it.
With his second performance of Larry Fleet's "Working Man," Thompson honored his roots while further proving just how far he's come in the competition. He never strayed from who he is — he just figured out a way to give us more of himself. I appreciate that. Click here to watch.
SAFE: Leah Marlene
"She was my foundation of music, and I wanted to be her," Marlene said of "childhood idol" Underwood... so I was a little surprised to hear that Marlene chosen to perform The Pretenders' "I'll Stand by You," a song Underwood covered for Idol Gives Back. It felt more like Marlene doing The Pretenders vs. Marlene doing Underwood, but a good performance is still a good performance. Marlene's light tone and airy vocals matched perfectly with this ballad. Katy Perry was spot-on when she said that it felt like she was hearing this song for the first time.
For her second song, Marlene chose Journey's "Separate Ways (Worlds Apart)," and it was... everything? Chilling, exciting, fun and just an overall terrific performance. Marlene continues to find new ways to impress me — this woman is a rock star. Click here to watch.
ELIMINATED: Fritz Hager
Back in the Idol studio after a bout with COVID-19, Hager approached this week's challenge with everything he had, thanks largely to Underwood who pushed him to embrace the "gruff, screamy" aspects of his voice. And embrace them he did, crushing his performance of Underwood and NEEDTOBREATHE's "I Wanna Remember." His efforts did not go unnoticed, earning particularly high praise from Richie, who applauded his ability to effortlessly switch gears. I also second Perry's note about Hager's "effortlessly cool" vibe.
Hager pushed his personal envelope even further with his follow-up performance of "Youngblood" by 5 Seconds of Summer. I'll be honest, I didn't know what to make of this new Hager at first, with his leather jacket and exposed white socks and guitar-less hands. But I enjoyed what I saw, and something tells me that this side of Hager has been waiting to jump out this whole time.
I'll be honest, I was more disappointed to say goodbye to Hager than I expected.
ELIMINATED: Nicolina
"Blown Away" is one of my favorite Underwood songs (the drama!), and I'm pretty sure I Grinch-smiled when I heard that Nicolina was singing it this week. The result was another theatrical performance from the belting queen of Season 20, and I have no complaints. What would I even say? More cape? More wind? She's a one-woman show!
The powerhouse performances continued with Nicolina's beautiful take on Adele's "All I Ask." I enjoy the theatrics that come with most of Nicolina's appearances, but I also appreciated just watching her do her thing sans wind machines and capes. I felt every note of this bittersweet ballad, which fit Nicolina's golden voice like a glove.
Unfortunately, Nicolina didn't receive enough of the viewers' votes to stick around any longer.
