Devil In Ohio: Netflix's Satanic Cult Drama Left Us With A Few Questions...
The following contains spoilers from all eight episodes of Netflix's Devil in Ohio.
Emily Deschanel this weekend danced with the Devil in Ohio, in Netflix's eight-episode drama in which she played a hospital psychiatrist who shelters a cult escapee named Mae (Snowpiercer alum Madeleine Arthur).
Dr. Suzanne Mathis' world, however, was quickly turned upside down as Mae's presence threatened to tear her own family apart. Sam Jaeger (Parenthood) played Suzanne's husband Peter, while Alisha Newton (Heartland), Xaria Dotson (American Vandal) and Naomi Tan played the couple's daughters, Helen, Jules and Dani.
If you, too, have completed your Devil in Ohio binge, weigh in on the questions we have below, and then feel free to chime in with your own!
1 | As asked in our latest TV Questions column: Which was harder to believe, that a teenager in the year 2022 has a darkroom photography hobby, or that her whole family plays Charades at night?
2 | Would Mae have lasted another five minutes under your roof after she invoked the "ruler of demons" when saying grace?
3 | Did you think Mae had used telekinesis to flip that hallway cross upside-down when visiting the foster home?
4 | How do you not cast an actress with similarly striking blue eyes as a young Emily Deschanel?
5 | Was wee Dani's (dubbed-in?) singing voice — especially for "Don't Rain on My Parade" — a bit too good?
6 | What was with Detective Lopez's post-divorce drama? Maybe they wanted to establish that he is single (for the sub-subplot with his flirty RPD co-worker) or why he moved from a big city to this podunk town, but... multiple bothersome phone calls from the ex?
7 | No one heard/noticed Mae sneaking out in the middle of the night to worship at her wish-granting altar in the woods?
8 | No one thought twice about an anonymous stranger quietly paying for a young girl's birthday party...?
9 | What was Mae's original plan for the drugged soup, which had been offered to Jules before Peter reached for and ate it?
10 | How colossally did Peter misread the market for an over-customized McMansion situated in the middle of cow country?
11 | Did anyone else make the mistake of Googling the cast list, and thus knew who Tahmoh Penikett was playing when Malachi Dodd showed up at the open house? Just me? OK.
12 | There's always a Malachi, isn't there? #ChildrenOfTheCorn
13 | Would young Dani know the R-rated, 1975 cult film The Rocky Horror Picture Show well enough to dress as Columbia for Halloween?
14 | The Halloween decoration that "came to life" and turned to watch Dani walk away.... What/who was that?
15 | The point of Peter being invited to do a shot with bartender Princess Leia was...? To sully the character a bit in our eyes?
16 | Why did Jules dismiss Mae freaking out about the mark that the boy from OSU drew on her arm? (When the cult escapee freaks out over a weird symbol a stranger scribbles on your arm, you listen!)
17 | Was there any doubt, when Peter produced Suzanne's old Harvest Dance dress, who would end up wearing it?
18 | Has anything ever not gone sideways at a movie or TV show's Harvest Dance?
19 | After making such a fuss about Mae/"The Chosen One" needing to be sacrificed, do you think any of the cult members were really buying Malachi's spin about his wife stepping in instead?
20 | In the end, did Suzanne kinda royally get the shaft? Husband and kids up and move out on her, instead of just sending Mae to the facility that had been previously discussed?
21 | Some people are asking about a Season 2, but what would that look like? Suzanne now knows Mae's real deal. Get the kid to the facility with the horses and stuff!
What questions, serious or snarky, did Netflix's Devil in Ohio leave you with?
