Glee's Not-So-Guilty Pleasures: 10 Songs We Still Listen To Regularly
Joni Mitchell's "Big Yellow Taxi" wasn't one of the 700+ songs covered on Glee, but the sentiment still applies: "Don't it always seem to go that you don't know what you got 'til it's gone."
With the musical comedy poised to disappear from Netflix on Dec. 1, we're thanking Glee for its countless hours of service by celebrating a handful of its songs that truly stood the test of time — at least as far as our music libraries are concerned. Because while the show gave us plenty of cringeworthy numbers (two words: "Gangnam Style"), it also left us with some solid tracks that we're proud to keep in rotation.
They aren't necessarily the 10 "best" songs, and few of them carry any major weight in the context of the show, but we stand by each and every one.
Scroll down to check out 10 Glee covers we aren't ashamed to have in our earbuds all these years later, then drop a comment with your own additions: Which songs do you still listen to regularly?
10. 'It's My Life / Confessions Part II'
Season 1, Episode 6 ("Vitamin D")
Plenty of iconic mash-ups came out of Glee's six seasons — more of them are on this very list! — but "It's My Life / Confessions Part II" holds a special place in our hearts. Not only was this the show's first-ever mash-up attempt, but it turned a Bon Jovi rock anthem and an R&B classic into an unexpected, high-energy delight. When Artie comes in on Usher's lyrics, we're simply not ready.
9. 'Poker Face'
Season 1, Episode 20 ("Theatricality")
Eleven years later, it remains weird that Rachel and her mother duetted on this not-so-subtly sexy Lady Gaga song, with its lyrics like "bluffin' with my muffin." But we simply can't resist Lea Michele and Idina Menzel's gorgeous harmonies and fun melodic choices on this stripped-down piano version.
8. 'Thriller / Heads Will Roll'
Season 2, Episode 11 ("The Sue Sylvester Shuffle")
We'll suspend our disbelief that any high school football game in Ohio would ever have a halftime show this elaborate. Instead, we'll bask in the glory of Naya Rivera's effortless vocals on those "heads will roll" refrains, which are so good they made even Karofsky want to bust a move.
7. 'Rumor Has It / Someone Like You'
Season 3, Episode 6 ("Mash Off")
A good mash-up is a good mash-up, and when you're pulling from Glee's catalogue, there are few better options than Amber Riley and Naya Rivera joining forces on two of Adele's biggest hits. The result is an important reminder that Adele songs also have the power to hype you up, instead of merely shattering you to pieces.
6. 'Smooth Criminal'
Season 3, Episode 11 ("Michael")
Not unlike the man who came into Annie's window, this duet between Naya Rivera and Grant Gustin also snuck its way into our hearts... and into our music libraries. The palpable tension, the cello-centric arrangement, the "hoo!"s — it all works.
5. 'Crazy / You Drive Me Crazy'
Season 4, Episode 2 ("Britney 2.0")
Marley and Jake may not have been endgame, but there's no denying the vocal chemistry between Melissa Benoist and Jacob Artist, whose buttery smooth voices blend beautifully in this unexpectedly delightful Aerosmith/Britney Spears mashup.
4. 'Wide Awake'
Season 5, Episode 4 ("A Katy or a Gaga")
No one could acoustify — a word we possibly just invented — a well-known pop song quite like Glee could, and the underrated quartet of Jake, Tina, Kitty and Unique completely slayed this one. Those harmonies? The gentle choruses? Unique's run on "out of the blue"? Yes, yes and yes.
3. '3'
Season 4, Episode 2 ("Britney 2.0")
Teen Jesus, Trouty Mouth and Tina teaming to perform Britney Spears' iconic ode to threesomes? Our brain tells us this shouldn't work, but our ears tell another story. This stripped-down (teehee) rendition of the heavily produced anthem totally does the original song justice, while also showcasing Samuel Larsen, Chord Overstreet and Jenna Ushkowtiz's unique styles.
2. 'Brave'
Season 5, Episode 9 ("Frenemies")
Glee didn't grace us with many Rachel/Santana duets, but the ones we did get were always gorgeous, particularly this soaring take on a Sara Bareilles gem. Every listen makes us want to perfect our umbrella choreography.
1. 'Gloria'
Season 5, Episode 10 ("Trio")
You probably weren't expecting this list to include anything performed during Rachel and Santana's stint as singing waitresses in New York, but here we are. Lea Michele, Naya Rivera and (gay gasp) Adam Lambert take us on a high-energy, high-belting ride to disco heaven with a harmonious take on this classic jam.
