Afterlife With Archie Series, From Riverdale EPs, In The Works At Disney+ — Will The Original Cast Return?
Just in case Riverdale — with its musical numbers, supernatural storylines, and epic highs and lows of high school football — wasn't bonkers enough for your liking, Archie and the gang are eyeing a return to TV. And this time, they're bringing zombies!
Disney+ is developing a new series based on Afterlife With Archie, a comic book series written by Riverdale showrunner Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa, according to Deadline. The comics, which began printing in 2013, reimagine the idyllic town of Riverdale as a zombie-stricken hellscape — not that The CW's version of Riverdale wasn't its own little slice of hell.
Casting has not been announced, though it's not expected that any of the original cast members from The CW's Riverdale — which included breakout stars KJ Apa, Lili Reinhart, Camila Mendes and Cole Sprouse — will reprise their roles. Riverdale aired for seven seasons (2017–2023), also spawning the short-lived spinoff Katy Keene (2020).
Aguirre-Sacasa was also behind Chilling Adventures of Sabrina (2018–2020), whose titular witch crossed over to Riverdale to complete her storyline following the Netflix show's cancellation. What's more, Aguirre-Sacasa also gave us HBO Max's Pretty Little Liars reboot, which was revealed to share a universe with Riverdale.
Along with Aguirre-Sacasa and Greg Berlanti, additional executive producers on Afterlife With Archie include Jimmy Gibbons, Sarah Schechter, Leigh London Redman and Jon Goldwater.
