Based On A True Story Among Two Shows Cancelled At Peacock
Peacock has closed the book on Based on a True Story, cancelling the true-crime satire after two seasons, TVLine has confirmed. The streamer has also cancelled the sports comedy Mr. Throwback, starring Adam Pally and Stephen Curry, after one season. (Our sister site Variety first reported the news.)
The news comes five months after the release of True Story's second season, which dropped in its entirety in November. The cancellation caps its run at 16 episodes.
Based on a True Story Season 1 followed Ava and her husband Nathan (played by The Big Bang Theory's Kaley Cuoco and The Mindy Project's Chris Messina), a down-on-their-luck couple who seized a unique opportunity to capitalize on America's obsession with true crime by making a podcast with a serial killer, Matt (Tom Bateman) — aka the Westside Ripper — who eventually became romantically involved with Ava's sister Tory (Liana Liberato).
Season 2 introduced a copycat killer, who eventually was revealed to be Paige, sister of Westside Ripper victim Chloe Lake. Paige trapped Ava and Nathan in the Lipinski Sisters' podcast studio, and was prepared to kill them for profiting off of Chloe's death, until Matt showed up and saved the day.
Alas, just when it seemed like this vicious cycle was about to end, and Matt was going to turn himself over to the authorities, he managed to escape with Paige in tow, and Nathan was taken into custody, believed to be the Westside Ripper.
When asked in November about a potential Season 3, showrunner Annie Weisman told TVLine, "It feels like there is more story — the potential of either [Matt and Paige] teaming up, or a fight to the death between them. We'll have to wait and see, but they're definitely not done yet." She also suggested that she saw no end in sight for the show: "There continues to be more fascination, and transformation, in the world of crime, and the consumption of crime. So, I feel like there's more to reflect, more to tell... I don't see an endpoint yet."
