Baywatch Reboot Ordered At Fox With New Cast But Same 'Signature Red Swimsuits'
This is the kind of news we wish we could deliver in slow-motion: Fox is rebooting Baywatch.
The new iteration, which has received a straight-to-series order for 12 episodes, will be helmed by Burn Notice creator Matt Nix. An exact premiere date has not been set, but Baywatch 2.0 is expected to debut during the 2026-2027 season.
"Baywatch will feature adrenaline-fueled rescues, tangled relationships, complicated chemistry and beachside heroics that defined the original — now with an entirely new cast donning the show's signature red swimsuits, contemporary trappings, tensions and challenges, and a renewed mission to protect Southern California's shoreline," reads the show's official logline.
For the tragically uninitiated, Baywatch was a syndicated drama about California lifeguards that aired for 11 seasons from 1989 to 2001. Its first season debuted on NBC, but was canceled before being revived (and thriving!) in syndication. The series starred Knight Rider's David Hasselhoff and was responsible for making household names out of Pamela Anderson, Yasmine Bleeth and more.
"In its first run, Baywatch defined an entire era of beach life and elevated lifeguards to an iconic status," Fox boss Michael Thorn says in a statement. "Now, with our partners at Fremantle, this television juggernaut is set for a modern-day comeback. Together, Fox and Fremantle, along with Matt Nix and original co-creator Greg Bonann, will bring the California dream to a whole new generation of fans with fresh stories, rising stars and all the spectacle that make the Baywatch franchise a global sensation."
