Desperate Housewives Reboot From Kerry Washington In Works At Hulu — Who's Returning To Wisteria Lane?
A fresh scandal is brewing on one of TV's most iconic streets.
Wisteria Lane, an offshoot of Desperate Housewives, is currently in the works from 20th Television and Kerry Washington's production company Simpson Street, our sister site Deadline reports. Natalie Chaidez (The Flight Attendant) is also on board as a writer. Original series creator Marc Cherry was not included in the show's pitch, but he reportedly may still become involved as the project is developed.
Described as a "reimagining" of the iconic drama, which ran for eight seasons (2004–2012) on ABC, the series is being pitched as a "fun, sexy, darkly comedic soap/mystery in the vein of Desperate Housewives, set among a group of five very different friends and sometimes frenemies who all live on a picture-perfect cul de sac called Wisteria Lane. On the surface, all the Wisteria neighbors are living the dream: beautiful homes, gorgeous families, shiny SUVs in the driveway. But behind those white-picket fences and smiling Insta posts are SECRETS."
Desperate Housewives, which received 38 Primetime Emmy Award nominations during its original run, starred Teri Hatcher, Felicity Huffman, Marcia Cross and Eva Longoria as a tight-knit group of friends living on the ever-dramatic Wisteria Lane.
Although Cherry isn't currently attached to Wisteria Lane, he mentioned having "a couple of ideas" for an offshoot back in November 2024. "I would probably want to do the idea maybe in an earlier decade ... because the character I miss writing the most is actually Wisteria Lane," he told People.com. "That was the most fun playground anyone in the history of television has ever had, because we owned the whole street. I know that street like the back of my hand. When someone shoots a commercial on that street, I know it instantly, because I know all those houses, I know the geography. It was such a fun place to write for. And there's times when I go, 'You know what? I wonder if I could write Wisteria Lane in like, 1966.'"
Frankly, we can't say we're completely surprised by this news, as TVLine included Desperate Housewives in our 2021 list of TV shows we predicted would get rebooted someday. In fact, we pretty much predicted Wisteria Lane to a T: "Much of this Marc Cherry dramedy's success is owed to its lightning-in-a-bottle cast, but regardless of who was getting murdered, cheated on or hit by a falling airplane on any given Sunday, Wisteria Lane always provided the perfect stage for the wives' delicious antics," we wrote. "Who's to say that the iconic street's new residents aren't up to similarly soapy shenanigans today?"
Wisteria Lane is specifically in development at Onyx Collective, the brand behind several Hulu series, including Reasonable Doubt and Washington's own UnPrisoned.
