Bill Lawrence Defends Scrubs Revival, Urges Skeptical Fans To 'Get On Board'
As the long-gestating Scrubs revival inches ever closer, longtime fans are divided about whether their favorite show should come back or if it's better not to mess with a good thing. To those concerns, series creator Bill Lawrence has this to say, more or less: Come ooon!
Lawrence engaged with skeptical fans Friday on social media — just one day after TVLine reported that the revival is being developed for ABC — including someone who "truly loved this show growing up," but feels that there's "no reason to bring these characters back."
To that fan, and to anyone else who may be wishing the revival ill, Lawrence responded, "Why would you hope it doesn't happen? Not a ton of people are working out here. The cast/crew all love each other. And if it's great, you'll be psyched. If it's not, you won't watch. Get on board!"
When asked whether the new series will be able to recapture the magic of the original, Lawrence acknowledged, "We will have to come up with something that makes it seem worthwhile. And hopefully we will nail it. But big fun to try. It's our job! ... Look, honestly, this will be like all shows. We could blow it. We could nail it. I've had both experiences often."
Lawrence then summed up his thoughts on the new Scrubs by saying, "I get some folks' reservations the same way I get others' excitement. Both just feel like pressure to do something cool/new/good. We're gonna try. I imagine the world will let us know if it works."
A single-camera comedy about the employees of Sacred Heart Hospital, Scrubs originally aired for seven seasons on NBC (2001–2008), before relocating to ABC for its final two (2008–2009). The ninth season, subtitled Med School, served as a pseudo spinoff, with only a fraction of its original cast returning to educate the next generation of healthcare workers.
Now you tell us: Which camp do you find yourself in? Are you excited to see the beloved characters back in the hospital halls? Or was the original Scrubs' final, poorly received season enough to make you doubt the revival's potential? Drop a comment with your thoughts below.
