Superman Film Stars Share The Support They Received From TV's Tyler Hoechlin, Michael Rosenbaum

The new DCU's Clark Kent and Lex Luthor make their big screen debuts this Friday having the support of TV predecessors Tyler Hoechlin and Michael Rosenbaum.

The highly anticipated Superman (fka Superman: Legacy) film, written/directed by DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn, hits theaters July 11 and stars David Corenswet (of TV's The Politician and Lady in the Lake) as the titular Kal-El aka Daily Planet reporter Clark Kent.

Emmy winner Rachel Brosnahan (The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel) plays intrepid Daily Planet journo Lois Lane, while Nicholas Hoult (The Great) fills the role if supervillain Lex Luthor.

Speaking recently with Heart UK, Corenswet shared, "I had the pleasure of exchanging letters with two previous Supermans, Henry Cavill (2013's Man of Steel) and Tyler Hoechlin (The CW's Superman & Lois). They were very encouraging and we had a lovely exchange and I'm excited to meet them one day."

As for what was shared between the Supermen past and present, "They really just conveyed to me an encouragement and a sense of, you know, 'have fun with it,'" Corenswet said. "Which I think is Superman's way of doing it, too." (Watch the Corenswet video clip below.)

Similarly, Corenswet's on-screen adversary inhabits the role of Lex with the blessing of Smallville alum Rosenbaum, who actually wound up voicing a role for Superman.

When meeting for a March 2024 episode of Rosey's Inside of You podcast, "[Michael] was so kind and encouraging, and he really gave me a freedom and a confidence and a support that felt really lovely going into it," Hoult shared with EW.com. "He was probably the first person I saw play Luthor when I was growing up, so to get to ... chat with him beforehand was really special.

"The beautiful thing he said was, 'You've got this. Go have fun,'" Hoult recalled. "It's a, weirdly, kind of uplifting and wonderful thing to play a character that you've watched someone play and do a brilliant job at, to then have them say, 'Yeah, go get it. Go take it on.' .... Normally in acting, there's no comparisons when it's a unique character, but when there's been different interpretations, then obviously people do compare."

The cast for Superman, the first film in Gunn's brand-new DCU, also includes Edi Gathegi (The Blacklist) as Mister Terrific, Isabel Merced as Hawkgirl, Nathan Fillion (The Rookie) as Green Lantern Guy Gardner, Skyler Gisondo (The Righteous Gemstones) as Jimmy Olsen, Wendell Pierce (Elsbeth) as Perry White, Maria Gabriela de Faria (Besieged) as The Engineer, Mikaela Hoover (Happy Endings?) as Cat Grant, Anthony Carrigan (Barry) as Metamorpho, Victoria's Secret angel Sara Sampaio as Eve Teschmacher and Terence Rosemore (Outer Banks) as Otis.
