Sex Lives Of College Girls Fails To Find New Home After Max Cancellation

Classes and hookups will not resume on The Sex Lives of College Girls, which has failed to secure a new home after it was cancelled by Max in March.

"We were very much hoping to find a new home for that one, and I think we've now come to the end of the road, which is disappointing, because it's a show that we really love," Warner Bros. TV Group Chairman Channing Dungey told our sister site Deadline. "I'm so proud of the three seasons that we did at Max, but I don't think there's going to be more of College Girls."

Co-created by Mindy Kaling and showrunner Justin Noble, the comedy followed Essex College students/roommates Kimberly (Pauline Chalamet), Whitney (Alyah Chanelle Scott) and Bela (Amrit Kaur) as they juggled school, friendships, relationships and, yes, sex. Joining the ensemble in Season 3, following Reneé Rapp's exit as Leighton Murray, were Gracie Lawrence as the trio's new roommate, Kacey, and Mia Rodgers as another Essex student, Taylor.

In the Season 3 finale — which dropped on Jan. 23 — Bela kissed her new comedy pal Haley and came out as bisexual to her friends (but hesitated to tell her visiting mom); Whitney inspired the entire soccer team to stand up to the athletic board; Kimberly got arrested alongside hottie activist Noah for breaking into Essex's server room (to stop a bigoted speaker's livestream) and was picked up from jail by her ex-boyfriend Eli, who had apologized earlier for the way he treated her; Cooper broke up with Kacey after she started making plans for him to meet her mom and go on a cruise with her family; and Taylor told Bela that thanks to her, she didn't break her sobriety.C

As the finale wrapped up, Kacey belted out a showstopper performance of "Never Enough" in the Essex musical as Bela sat next to her mother and embraced Haley's hand. Her mom, in turn, wiped away Bela's tears and held her other hand. In the final shot of the episode, Bela, Whitney, Kimberly and Kacey laughed and celebrated in the dorm room.

Reflecting on the relatively cliffhanger-less ending, Noble told TVLine that he did not intend for it to serve as a potential series finale.

"I was just kind of choosing joy and celebration of these girls, who have been through a lot this season, which felt like the right creative ending for them," Noble said. "I got excited about this kind of symphony of wins that all of these girls could have together, and then it felt antithetical to that to tack on a cliffhanger for logistic TV-writing purposes."

"That being said, Kimberly Finkle is currently in a jail cell moments before the end of the finale and worried that the school that she spent her life trying to be in and the career path she's trying on [is] completely derailed," Noble continued. "And Bela is now out and dating different types of people. There's plenty of throws forward and new doors to go through. There's movement. There's new story on the horizon."

Noble's full statement from March about the cancellation follows:

"As creatives, we're sort of taught to never compliment our own projects. Or even to downplay it when other people do. But here's the thing: I think The Sex Lives Of College Girls is a pretty damn good TV show. Unfortunately, Max has decided not to order a fourth season. We are currently in discussions with some new potential homes for the show, and it's nice that there is so much interest – but regardless of what happens, I'm proud of this show and the work that so many incredibly talented people put into it.
After seeing our show listed as the most watched or second most watched scripted show on the entire platform, for about 70 straight days, this is not the outcome that I saw coming. I want to of course thank Mindy for creating this loud and fun world with me and trusting me with it, WB and Max for believing in us when we thought this show would resonate, our wildly talented cast, our amazingly funny writers, and our kind and caring and hard-working crew, who put so much of themselves into this show. (Someone hire these people! Keep them paid!)
No matter what happens, The Sex Lives Of College Girls has three seasons that showcased incredible perfomances and told so many important stories while also managing to fill those stories with laughs. In a world of "content", it's a show that strived to make sure it entertained – and I I can't help but mention that it feels like there are fewer and fewer comedy series every month – and we are living in an era where we need that comedy badly, so I really hope that turns around – but I will always be proud of this show for being the thing that we weren't seeing enough of: a hard comedy ensemble where ladies get the jokes.
And most of all, thank you to the fans. We really did do it all for you."
