Happy Gilmore 2 Sets Netflix Record, Hunting Wives Has Solid Debut
Happy Gilmore 2 eagled with the release of its Netflix sequel. (Did I get that golfing term right...? I gave up the sport in college.)
The 114-minute, Adam Sandler-led follow-up — nearly 30 years in the making! — racked up 46.7 million views in its opening weekend, marking the best bow for any of the SNL alum's made-for-Netflix pix.
Happy Gilmore 2 also delivered the biggest U.S. opening weekend of all-time for a Netflix flick. (I don't know if this is the one that it beat, but a little over a year ago, Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F racked up 41 million views with its Fourth of July weekend debut.)
While its sequel easily claimed No. 1 on Netflix's ranking of English-language films for the week of July 21, the original Happy Gilmore placed third with 11.4 million views. (KPop Demon Hunters ranked No. 2 with 26.3 million views.)
Over on Netflix's ranking of English-language TV shows, the newly renewed Untamed dominated with 26.1 million global views for the week, followed by the true crime series Amy Bradley Is Missing (10.2 million views).
The Hunting Wives, the Lionsgate-produced sudser that relocated from Starz to Netflix not long at all before its premiere, racked up 5.2 million views, marking the biggest third-place finish in seven weeks (since Sirens rated No. 3 with 7.9 million views).
The Sandman (3.3 million views) and RAW (2.7 million views) round out the English-language TV Top 5.
