AGT Video: Charity Lockhart Earns Golden Buzzer With Stunning Beatles Cover — Watch Her Full Audition
America's Got Talent was visited by another golden voice on Tuesday.
The third week of Season 20 auditions introduced viewers to 49-year-old Charity Lockhart, who stole our hearts long before she earned a coveted Golden Buzzer.
"I absolutely love to sing," she told the judges. "I love music, but I also love my children. I have two children, they're little. One is 27, and the other I can hold... he's 21." At this point, we were already putty in her hands.
She further endeared herself to the judges with a powerful story of how she used her voice to rebuild her life after temporarily being homeless following a divorce. She began by asking live bands at clubs and bars if she could sing with them, which did earn her "a little money," but it wasn't until she entered — and won! — a local singing competition that she was able to secure an apartment.
Now Lockhart's dreams are clear: "I want to keep singing — and, of course, probably collect a Grammy along the way," she said.
Unfortunately, her audition didn't get off to the best start, with Simon Cowell stopping her after only a few seconds of "Over the Rainbow" from The Wizard of Oz, a decision that was met with loud boos from the live audience. You could even hear one contestant backstage asking, "Bro, what are you doing?"
Well, we'll tell you what bro was doing: "I stopped you because I like you, but it just wasn't working for me," Cowell told Lockhart, asking her to perform a second song she had prepared instead.
And it's a darn good thing he did, because she proceeded to deliver an absolutely incredible cover of The Beatles' "Golden Slumber" — a fitting song choice for the reward she was about to receive.
"Every once in a while, you see someone, you connect with them and they just bring more and more to the table," Mel B told her when she was finished. "I think you're amazing, and I want to give you this right now," she added, slamming her hand down on the Golden Buzzer.
