Andor Season 2: 'A Very Brutal Reality' Triggered Mon Mothma's Episode 3 'Chaos' Dance, Says Genevieve O'Reilly
The following contains spoilers from the first three episodes of Andor Season 2, now streaming on Disney+.
Even a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away, sometimes you just need to dance it out.
Across the first three episodes of Andor Season 2, Senator Mon Mothma of Chandrila juggled hosting the wedding of her and husband Perrin's (Alastair Mackenzie) daughter Leida (Bronte Carmichael) with the quiet, ongoing planning of no less than a rebellion.
But when longtime friend and banker Tay Kolma (Ben Miles) pulled Mon aside amid wedding revelry to express his concern that, in deftly funneling mysterious funds for her, he took on far greater a risk than he first imagined, a genteel shakedown was afoot.
Mon believed she had things under control, even when she updated party guest/co-conspirator Luthen Rael (Stellan Skarsgård) on Tay's ask. ("I'll find a number" that will buy his silence, she repeated.) But Luthen — already on edge about not hearing from Cassian (Diego Luna) since he stole a TIE fighter, and unable to have Kleya (Elizabeth Dulau) freely work their underground radios — was visibly anxious.
Luthen refuses to risk any loose ends, or lips. And at the close of Episode 3, we and Vel (Faye Marsay) saw Tay get driven home (though probably not) by Aldhani heist operative Cinta (Varada Sethu).
Meaning, Mon is now fully realizing just how much higher the stakes are, for her and those close to her.
'ITS VERY DIFFERENT TO BE WITHIN' A REVOLUTION
For the well-intentioned senator to this point, there has been "an idea of rebellion, or an idea of sacrifice, or an idea of revolution," portrayer Genevieve O'Reilly tells TVLine. "And then I think it's very different to be within it."
In Season 2, Episode 3, "what [Andor creator] Tony Gilroy's writing does is really expose that in the moment, within the 'gilded cage' of Chandrila, within a wedding, within the architecture of those beautifully pleated costumes," the actress continues. "You have this mirror that is stripped away because Luthen brings a very brutal reality to her," that Tay must be dealt with.
"It's a really interesting moment, because not very much is said, but you understand that there is a tacit agreement," O'Reilly notes. "And it also makes such sense of this woman, who of course has blood on her hands."
'DANCING TO STOP FROM SCREAMING'
Whatever fate befalls Tay "haunts" Mon Mothma, Gilroy himself previews. With the entirety of Season 2's 12 episodes spanning the last four years until the events of the Star Wars movie Rogue One, "It comes back up in a later conversation that it's haunted her for years."
In the moment, there at Leida's wedding, Mon's response to the ratcheted-up tension she is feeling is to kick back some more adult bevs, and then escape to the dance floor and move with abandon.
"She's hiding" on the dance floor, says Gilroy. "Dancing to stop from screaming."
Adds O'Reilly, "The dancing, it's not a revelry." Rather, "It's an image of a physical chaos" that Mon is feeling as the rebellion effort shifts into a whole new gear....
