Creature Commandos Recap: Who Didn't Survive The Finale? Who's New For Season 2? Plus, Grade It!

The Creature Commandos team will look a bit different when Season 2 of Max's already-renewed, animated DCU series rolls around.

In the Season 1 finale, "A Very Funny Monster," The Bride (voiced by Indira Varma), Doctor Phosphorus (Alan Tudyk), Nina Mazursky (Zoe Chao) and Weasel (Sean Gunn) pulled the trigger on the plan to kill Princess Ilana (Maria Bakalova) and thus save the world, per Circe's vision. Eric Frankenstein (David Harbour) stumbled onto the scene to excitedly reunite with the Bride, and in doing so nearly waylaid their plans. But an unmoved Bride cooly shot dead her ex, multiple times for good measure.

The Bride & Co. were lying in wait in the woods surrounding Ilana's compound, as the princess decided to take a dip in her swimming pool. Given the perimeter of guards, the Bride decided that it would be up to Nina to execute the murder, by swimming up on Ilana undetected.

The stress of the situation — her first cold-blooded kill — triggered flashbacks for Nina, who we learned was born with her lungs outside of her body. Luckily, her father Edward was a scientist, and he at first outfitted the newborn with an apparatus that wrapped around her torso, to help her breathe (when the weight of it wasn't forcing her to topple over). Nina's mom saw the contraption as freakish and not an answer, so she peaced out on her family. When the breathing contraption proved insufficient to help a growing Nina, Edward got the idea to use gene therapy, though the outcome was not what he expected — turning the toddler into a gilled, piscine mutant.

Now outfitted with the fish tank-type head gear we see today, Nina suffered much taunting as a teen, and despite her father's best efforts and love, she ran away from home one day, leaving behind a note. When a man snapped a photo of this unusual creature in the local waters one night, a manhunt ensued. Edward raced to the scene to save and comfort his daughter, to reassure her that she is fine the way she is and no burden on him — but an anxious policeman shot Edward in the back, just as father and child reunited.

Back in the present...

As an anxious Nina entered the pool to assassinate Iliana, the team got word from Waller via Rick Flag Sr. that Clayface had been impersonating Professor MacPherson, and that Circe's vision was no longer to be believed. Ilana apparently was no threat at all! Luckily (?), Weasel — anxious to reunite with his "go fetch!" playmate — darted away from the Bride and Phosphorous and into the princess' pool. The commotion led Ilana to discover Nina closing in on her, and the ladies got into a struggler over Nina's dagger. Nina wound up on the losing end, fatally stabbed by the princess.

Ilana would pay a price for that act of self defense, though, when the Bride later showed up in her royal office to announce that she had put all the pieces together. See, Circe's vision was indeed accurate, and Ilana had actually used Clayface to create the perception that MacPherson was an imposter. Ilana does mean harm, but before she could do any (or fire off the pistol in her drawer), the Bride put a bullet right through the princess' forehead.

In an epilogue set back at Belle Reve, Waller invited the Bride to stick around and head up a Commandos team comprised of Weasel, Doctor Phosphorus, an upgraded G.I. Robot, King Shark (Diedrich Bader), the vampire Nosferata and Khalis (a zombified mummy).

A mid-credits scene then revealed that Frankenstein had survived the Bride's hail of bullets and was again being nursed back to health by another old woman — convinced more than ever that his ex still carries a torch for him!
