High Potential's Game Master Arc Reaches Dramatic Conclusion: 'There's Always More To Every Story,' EP Says

Tuesday's episode of High Potential finally put a name to a handsome face — actually, make that two.

We'll start with the Game Master (David Giuntoli), who was revealed to be Matthew Clark, a disgruntled genius who vowed revenge on the LAPD after his mother died in prison when he was young. But given how clever "Matthew" has proven himself thus far, can we really trust that we know everything about him now? Don't be so sure.

"There's always more to every story in this show," showrunner Todd Harthan tells TVLine. "I don't like to put periods at the end of sentences. There's a huge possibility that this story has more life in it. It's something we talk about a lot, and yes, every word coming out of his mouth should be taken with a grain of salt."

Before Matthew jumped from the balcony (did anyone else think he was a goner?!) onto the LAPD's inflatable airbag below, he left Morgan with a chilling message: "My mother died in prison. I won't." That line, coupled with Morgan's thoughtful expression as she watched him taken into custody, has us thinking they haven't seen the last of each other.

To that notion, Harthan asks, "Did Clarice Starling want to see Hannibal Lecter again over the course of The Silence of the Lambs? It's weird, They almost became, in a sadistic way, each other's muse, certainly more him to her than her to him. There was something incredibly satisfying about winning that game and getting him, but boy are the cases that come after going to be easier than that one was."

"If you were to really dig deep into her subconscious, would she like to dance with him again? As long as she wins," Harthan continues. "As long as she could be guaranteed that she was going to win and nobody was going to get hurt, she'd probably do it again."

We also learned that Mekhi Phifer is not playing Morgan's estranged ex Roman, but rather a trusted associate (and "landscaper") named Arthur Ellis. He crashed Elliot's talent show — which was incredible, by the way — to introduce himself to Morgan, as Arthur was told by Roman that she's the only person he can trust. Roman apparently asked Arthur to get eyes on Morgan and make sure she's OK, but when Morgan asked about the contents of Roman's backpack in the photo from Nevada, Arthur was less than forthcoming.

Moving forward, Arthur will remain a "hugely important" piece of the puzzle that is Roman's disappearance. "One of the things we didn't want to do is have the Roman story constantly be pulled through files and photographs and second, third, fourth-hand accounts," Harthan tells us. "This was a character that was born from wanting to give the audience a satisfying initial thread."

We'll have more from our chat with Harthan, including the story behind the use of "Bizarre Love Triangle" in this week's episode, tomorrow morning. For now, drop a comment with your thoughts on the conclusion (for now) to the Game Master arc.
