Superman & Lois Casts Tom Cavanagh As [Spoiler] In Final Season: 'It Was The No-Brainer Of All Time'

Warning: We're about to spoil the events of Superman & Lois Season 4, Episode 8.

Longtime Arrowverse fans were greeted by a friendly face — albeit not in the friendliest of roles — on Monday's episode of Superman & Lois, which featured Tom Cavanagh as TV "journalist" Gordon Godfrey.

Directed by Michael Cudlitz, the dramatic hour found Godfrey hosting a live televised debate between Lex and Lois, one which Lois nearly won when she threatened to have Lex's own daughter corroborate his misdeeds on the air. Unfortunately, Milton (aka "Brainiac") hijacked John Henry Irons' suit and interrupted the debate before Lois had a chance to play that trump card. Still, it made for some darn good television.

Godfrey has made multiple animated appearances over the years, but this marks one of the DC character's few live-action iterations. What made this the perfect role for Cavanagh to inhabit? Simple: "He's hilarious and has more energy than a 10-year-old," co-showrunner Brent Fletcher tells TVLine. "[The character is] not like him at all, but he can play that guy perfectly." Adds co-showrunner Todd Helbing: "It was the no-brainer of all time."

Cudlitz was thrilled to welcome Cavanagh into the Superman & Lois sandbox, both as a director and as his scene partner.

"He's not only a cast favorite but also a crew favorite, and he was wonderful to have on set," Cudlitz tells TVLine. "He's a lot of fun, he has a lot of energy, he's incredibly creative, and he's not afraid to throw out everything he's done and come up with something new. He's also incredibly supportive, so I was grateful to have him on set. He's a hoot."

Cavanagh portrayed Harrison Wells in nearly 150 episodes of The Flash during its nine-season run on The CW, also crossing over to several other Arrowverse shows, including Arrow, Supergirl and DC's Legends of Tomorrow. This marked his first appearance on Superman & Lois, though not in the same role.

And here's a question you may be asking yourself after Monday's episode: What was up with all those references to Jamie Kennedy? The comedian was mentioned no less than three separate times in relation to how famous the Kents are becoming.

"Todd and I went to a Ween concert and passed Jamie Kennedy's house," Fletcher recalls. "So Jamie Kennedy was just kind of on the brain. It wasn't really about anything. It was just random, but the randomness made us laugh. I hope it isn't mean. It's just meant to be silly."

In fact, "The most I laugh all season is when Candice [mentions Jamie Kennedy] and how straight Michael Bishop plays it," Fletcher adds. "It makes me laugh every time." (To be fair, this season has been many things, but funny isn't the first one that comes to mind.)

Elsewhere in the episode, Lois learned that she's officially cancer-free, while Clark got considerably less hopeful news — his human heart will eventually give out, and the boys will need to take over for him when that day comes. (OK, but not anytime soon, right? We already lost him once this season. We can't go through that again.)

While the Kents grappled with Clark's mortality, Lex and Amanda — who upgraded their relationship to "co-workers with benefits" this week — held hands as they beheld Brainiac's latest project, an upgraded Steel suit perfect for a rematch with Superman.
