Wednesday Gives Xavier A Mysterious Exit In Season 2 Premiere: 'We Have Seen The Last Of Him,' EPs Confirm

A love triangle on Wednesday? How very Season 1.

The Netflix drama returned on Aug. 6 with the first half of its second season, and it wasted little time showing one of Wednesday Addams' former suitors the door.

Midway through Episode 1, Wednesday (Jenna Ortega) returns to her dorm room, where Enid (Emma Myers) reveals that a special delivery arrived from Xavier (Percy Hynes White), who was last seen attempting to welcome Wednesday into the 21st century by giving her a cell phone. Xavier's latest gift, while just as practical, is far creepier — it's a creepy painting of a red-eyed raven, and it comes with a note attached.

"I tried texting, but I guess you lost the phone I gave you," he writes. "Consider this my goodbye gift. The image suddenly flashed in my head. Don't ask me how I know or what it means, but it's connected to you, I'm sure. Who's Wednesday Addams without a mystery to solve, right?"

It was previously reported that Hynes White wouldn't be returning as a series regular, but if you're hoping for a cameo down the line, you probably shouldn't hold your breath. As co-showrunner Alfred Gough confirms to TVLine, "we have seen the last of him." Xavier is "at a boarding school we mentioned in Season 1, Reichenbach, which is like the European version of Nevermore."

(In 2023, Hynes White released a statement on Instagram, responding to since-deleted social media posts that alleged he was a perpetrator of sexual assault.)

But fear not, lovers of love! Just because Wednesday isn't entrenched in a cliché love triangle this season, that doesn't mean sparks won't still fly. Hyde hottie Tyler (Hunter Doohan) is still very much in play, albeit in captivity, and the scenes between him and Wednesday are just as electric as ever.

"There's definitely something there, and he can definitely twist the knife in terms of that relationship," Gough tells TVLine. "Wednesday went down the path of romance sort of reluctantly in Season 1, and she paid the price for that, so she's closing the door on that avenue of her adolescence for the time being. But when she gets together with Tyler, sparks always fly."

Gough continues, "There's something unspoken between them. We love to see them together and to explore that that dynamic. Both Tyler and Jenna play it so brilliantly, and there's a lot that's unsaid in those scenes."

OK, let's talk: Are you glad Wednesday leaned away from YA tropes, or did you enjoy the CW-worthy love triangle in Season 1? And what are your thoughts on Season 2 so far? Grade Episode 1 below, then drop a comment with your full review.
