This Stephen J. Cannell Cop Show Ended With An Unresolved Cliffhanger After 8 Seasons

Unresolved cliffhangers are something of a horror story for audiences and creatives alike — but they do happen unfortunately, like on one Stephen J. Cannell police procedural TV show that ran for a solid eight seasons. Cannell created "Silk Stalkings," a cop drama that premiered in 1991. The series followed two detectives investigating sexually-motivated crimes in Palm Beach, Florida, and the show's last three seasons focused on Detective Tom Ryan (Chris Potter) and Detective Cassandra "Cassy" St. John (Janet Gunn).

The pair were not only partners in the field, but former partners in life, as they're divorced. From their introduction in Season 6, the duo spent time rekindling their romance for three seasons before a major bombshell hit: In the series finale, Tom revealed to Cassy that he never loved her. Needless to say, the writers never had a chance to explore the shocking plot twist in the cliffhanger ending for "Silk Stalkings."

"Silk Stalkings" — a wordplay on "silk stockings," an allusion to the series' focus on sexual crimes of passion — was originally part of the "Crimetime After Primetime" block on CBS, an attempt to build a late-night audience for crime dramas that only lasted three years. After two seasons, the show moved to the USA Network — but fans were still locked into the series, which focused on Sergeants Rita Lance (Mitzi Kapture) and Chris Lorenzo (Rob Estes) for the first five seasons. 

The couple met a tragic end, with Lorenzo being killed in the line of duty shortly after the pair got married. From there, the show's core duo changed to Detectives Michael Price (Nick Kokotakis) and Holly Rawlins (Tyler Layton) midway through Season 5. That said, ratings slipped upon their arrival, so Detectives Tom Ryan and Cassandra "Cassy" St. John took over as the leading pair for Season 6.

While Tom and Cassy's storyline carried "Silk Stalkings" for another three seasons, USA reportedly claimed it was time to cut the cord when they canceled the series towards the end of Season 8. Despite announcing the cancellation about a month and a half before its end, however, the show didn't take the opportunity to conclude with a proper ending.
