Jack Reacher may rely on his impressive strength and keen intellect to bust the bad guys, but according to his creator, it's his depth that truly makes him remarkable. The protagonist of British novelist Lee Child's bestselling "Jack Reacher" series has headlined multiple live-action projects over the years, ranging from a popular film franchise to the Alan Ritchson-led Prime Video series.

No matter how many different adaptations the character receives, Child maintains that Reacher consistently stands out from other thriller leads, and for good reason. "Reacher is a character who would prefer to do nothing. He just wants to live a quiet life ... he's not interested in setting the world to rights," Child told Shortlist in a 2022 interview. "But if he gets involved with something then he's going to do it 100%. But then, alongside that, he is deeply interested in lots of things. He loves blues music, he loves the little details of life ... he has multiple dimensions."

In defining the character first and foremost by his life outside of the fray, Child sought to lend the character a complexity that would further engage audiences in his adventures. "A lot of heroes have little characteristics that are kind of bolted on to make them more interesting," explained Child. "But Reacher is not like that and I think that's what people are going to find appealing."

Why a TV adaptation works so much better for Jack Reacher

Despite the box office success of the "Jack Reacher" movie franchise, Child has always believed that the character was better suited for TV. When the author was first approached by Prime Video about a Jack Reacher television show, he saw a golden opportunity to do the character justice. "That was the huge attraction, doing the long-form narrative that season-long TV gives you," Child revealed to Shortlist. He felt that the format of a proper Prime Video series would render Jack Reacher's "fully rounded character ... all the more effective."

"Reacher" has since gone on to become one of the most successful series on Prime Video, with over 50 million viewers tuning in for Season 3 in 2025. The show even got an early renewal for Season 5. "I think it is addictive for a novelist," Child elaborated, reflecting on the benefits of TV adaptations versus film. "I can guarantee that if streaming television had been around before, no novelist would ever have chosen anything else, because this works so much better." "Reacher" Season 4 began streaming in August 2026.
