If you love westerns and staying in on cold nights watching TV on the couch, Netflix has you covered. The beloved Canadian family drama "Heartland" now has 19 seasons streaming on the platform. Plus, Season 20 began airing in Canada on CBC TV and CBC Gem this month, so even when you reach the final episode currently on Netflix, the journey will continue.

Set in Alberta, Canada, "Heartland" follows the Bartlett-Fleming family's life on their titular horse ranch through generations. The story begins with the death of Marion (Lisa Langlois) — Amy (Amber Marshall) and Lou's (Michelle Morgan) mother — who dies in a truck accident trying to rescue a horse. The tragedy brings Lou back to the ranch from New York as her younger sister recovers in the hospital. Jack Bartlett (Shaun Johnston) also pitches in on the ranch to help the business out of financial trouble and preserve his daughter's legacy. While Lou has to confront the life she ran away from, Amy is tasked with carrying on her mother's gift as a horse whisperer. Fans of shows like "The Way Home" and "When Calls the Heart" will love "Heartland."

The Bartlett-Flemings have faced a wide variety of challenges, tragedies, triumphs, and love stories since the show's 2007 premiere. The series, based on the book series of the same name by Lauren Brooke, is currently Canada's longest-running one-hour scripted drama.

Heartland has influenced the lives of its fans and star

"Heartland" has become a worldwide streaming sensation thanks to the rise in the popularity of westerns and the easy access to the show that Netflix gives international fans. If the 19 seasons on Netflix are not enough for you, don't worry. The latest episodes of the show premiere in the U.S. a month after they debut in Canada, on the streaming service UP Faith & Family on November 19, 2026, with new episodes added weekly for the first five weeks before a holiday break.

"Heartland" star Amber Marshall, who was 19 when she began filming the show and is now 38, reflected on the show's international success ahead of the Season 20 premiere, and the fact that fans credit the story with supporting them through difficult times in their lives. Marshall told Global News Canada, "It's special to know that a show can resonate with someone who's never been to Canada, that's never been to Alberta, and they can watch it and feel a connection to those characters and to that 'Heartland' family."

The scenery in Alberta has become a character of its own, drawing international fans to Canada. Marshall, who is from London, Ontario, moved to Alberta while filming Season 2. But she doesn't just live in the area, she lives on a ranch just like her alter ego, with her own horses, cows, and foster dogs. "I can never see myself relocating again. This is home for me," Marshall said.
