"Marshals" star Luke Grimes won't be tuning into Season 2, but only because he refuses to watch himself act — and for a good reason. A 20-year veteran of Hollywood, Grimes has been playing Kayce Dutton from "Yellowstone" and its spin-off "Marshals" since 2018. All actors have their own unique strategies for getting into character, and Grimes makes sure to avoid reviewing his past performances.

"I don't know that it's very helpful for me to watch myself. In fact, I think it might actually hurt my process a little bit," Grimes recently told People while promoting "Marshals" Season 2. "I wouldn't say I'm a method actor — whatever that term means these days. I have a method, and that method can change from job to job. Sometimes I find things necessary to find a character, and that same thing might not work on the next job."

Kayce, a former United States Navy SEAL, has a lot on his plate in the newest chapter of "Marshals" as he tackles the tough task of raising and protecting his teenage son Tate (Brecken Merrill) from danger. Balancing family loyalty with his desire to establish himself as an individual separate from the Dutton legacy, Kayce has a multitude of layers that Grimes works to bring to life.

Luke Grimes aims for authenticity when playing Kayce Dutton

Any TV show set in Taylor Sheridan's "Yellowstone" universe demands that its actors bring their A-game and portray raw, human emotions in front of the camera. Instead of seeking inspiration from what he did in "Yellowstone" and "Marshals" Season 1, Luke Grimes looks to develop Kayce organically with the material he's given.

In an interview with Holler, the actor shared some insight into how not watching his "Yellowstone" scenes has helped him portray Kayce more authentically in "Marshals." "I feel like if I throw too many things into the mix, then maybe I'll start coming at the material in the wrong way, and it'll be less like a living, breathing human being, and more like a calculated person who's acting," he explained. "So, for me, it was more about honestly playing the moments."

Whether it's a sincere moment with Tate or a heart-pounding fight with criminals, Grimes' Kayce always wears his heart on his sleeve. The challenges for Kayce are just beginning in "Marshals" Season 2, and fans of the CBS series should expect more risky missions and character growth in the weeks to come.
