Luke Grimes And Kevin Costner Have 'Never Spoken' Since Yellowstone Ended, The Marshals Star Says
Kayce Dutton actor Luke Grimes has opened up about his relationship with his former "Yellowstone" co-star Kevin Costner, who played his father, John Dutton, in the hit Taylor Sheridan show. When he sat down for an interview with USA Today in October 2026, Grimes said, "I've never spoken to Kevin since we stopped working together." He went on to clarify that there isn't any particular reason for this, saying, "You know, we're both busy guys and life moves on." TVLine has reached out to Costner for comment.
Grimes was also asked about the possibility of Costner appearing in his "Yellowstone" spinoff "Marshals" via a flashback. As "Yellowstone" fans know, Costner's John Dutton died during Season 5. While Grimes would welcome a cameo, he's not holding his breath. "I doubt that will happen at this point," he said. Grimes added that he thinks Kayce's late wife Monica (Kelsey Asbille) would make a better flashback, as this would "be more poignant to the character." Does that mean Asbille has been approached about reprising her role? "There's been no conversation, but I sure would love it. I love working with her."
Luke Grimes has discussed his relationship with Kevin Costner before
This isn't the first time that Luke Grimes has spoken about his relationship with Kevin Costner. In December 2024, he opened up to Esquire about how Costner's "Yellowstone" exit — which occurred after a bout of behind-the-scenes drama — impacted the atmosphere on set. "To be really honest, there was a part of Kevin being gone that meant some of the conflict was gone," Grimes said. "Obviously, it didn't make it super fun to be around. Not pointing any fingers, but it was actually the easiest season we've filmed."
That same month, Grimes revealed that there was no bad blood between himself and Costner in a separate interview with Men's Health. "I haven't talked to him since," he said. Just like he did in his recent USA Today chat, Grimes made sure to clarify that this wasn't down to anything other than life going on. "It's not a case of any hard feelings or anything; it's just, he's Kevin Costner," he explained, adding, "He's a big deal. I do have his phone number — I just don't feel like it's my place to reach out. He can reach out to me if he wants to."
"Marshals" Season 2 premiered on October 4, 2026 on CBS and Paramount+.
