Frasier's Kelsey Grammer Plots NBC Comeback With Medical Drama Pops, From Chicago Med Producer
Kelsey Grammer is eyeing a return to the network that made him a household name: The "Cheers" and "Frasier" vet is attached to star in "Pops," a new medical drama in development at NBC, TVLine has confirmed.
In a premise that doesn't sound all that dissimilar from ABC's "The Rookie," the prospective series casts Grammer as "a man aged out of a successful career" who, "in desperate need of a fresh start, jumps into the chaotic world of emergency medicine alongside first responders half his age," per NBC's official logline.
The project is inspired by the true story of Ed Levien, a Maryland resident who became an EMT in his 60s. Danny Weiss, who spent 10 seasons on NBC's "Chicago Med," rising from staff writer to co-executive producer, will write and executive-produce. Grammer will also executive-produce alongside Grammnet's Jordan McMahon, Levien, and 3 Arts Entertainment. The project hails from Universal Television. (Deadline was first to report the news.)
Kelsey Grammer Isn't the Only Frasier Vet Circling a New NBC Show
Grammer is best known for his portrayal of Dr. Frasier Crane on "Cheers" (1982-1993) and its long-running spin-off, "Frasier" (1993-2004). He most recently reprised the role in Paramount+'s "Frasier" revival, which was canceled in January 2025 after two seasons.
Interestingly, Grammer isn't the only "Frasier" alum plotting an NBC comeback. His former co-star David Hyde Pierce, who played Frasier's younger brother Niles, is also attached to star in a new comedy in development at the network. The untitled multi-camera sitcom, from "Mom" veteran Marco Pennette, was first announced in September.
