Dexter: Resurrection Recap: An Old Foe Makes Dexter An Offer He Can't Refuse
A former adversary of Dexter's is back in New York, and she's looking to collab. That is, if she's not trying to start a war.
Uma Thurman's Charley Brown returned to "Dexter: Resurrection" Friday with a proposition that was too appealing to refuse. When she first pops back into Dexter and Harrison's lives, she surprises them at a diner, claiming she has "unfinished business" to discuss. She's been fully cleared by Wallace after her employer, Leon Prater, disappeared. However, she's feeling a bit guilty about all of the bad she's done while under Prater's tutelage, and wants to make amends. She's well aware of what happened when Dexter and Al reunited (more on that here), and she wants to help Dexter "tie up some loose ends."
She knows Dexter took Prater's files, and while he may have already dealt with the Midnight Mangler and the Yonkers Slayer, The New York Ripper is still alive and well in his backyard. There's also the Jaw Splitter and the Sleepy-Eyed Stranger at large. Dexter has no way of finding them, but Charley does! She offers to "serve as a facilitator," providing him with their current names and private email addresses, allowing him to lure them out of their hidey-holes. She'll then step aside and let Dexter get to work. He tells her he works alone. She tells him to think about it.
Dexter is rightfully wary. He doesn't know if he can actually trust this woman because he knows exactly what she's capable of. Even Harry suggests that Charley's deal is a good one. "Things feel a little different now," he tells his son. "Maybe being alone all the time has become part of the problem." So what's a guy having a midlife crisis to do? He's at least got to consider the offer in front of him. (Read what Michael C. Hall had to say about Dexter's reunion with Charley here.)
Charley isn't the only familiar face in Episode 2
A knock on the door interrupts Dexter's thoughts and it's Joey Quinn. Quinn greets Dexter with a strong embrace, but unlike Angel, he's not suspicious of his former colleague... at least not yet. The two guys head to a bar for drinks where they clink glasses to the life of the late Batista. Quinn reveals that he's now a private investigator working for the families who lost people to Prater's evil crew. His goal is to find Prater and try to get justice for the victims and Angel.
Quinn recounts that Prater had items belonging to many of Miami's all-star serial killers including the Bay Harbor Butcher. Dexter makes a mental note to keep an eye on Quinn and even offers his help. But will working together again bring Quinn that much closer to Dexter's truth? Time will tell.
Dexter accepts Charley's proposal
Dexter tells Charley that he's in, but only if she'll bring the killers to him, on his turf. She says she'll reach out to the Jaw Splitter and the Sleepy-Eyed Stranger, and invite them to one of Prater's gatherings. Once they arrive, "The Dark Passenger" will take care of the rest. Dexter tells her she can't get away from being in the middle of this. If she wants to pay her penance, these are the terms she must agree to.
"It's nice to work with a professional," she tells him. "It's nice to be recognized," Dex replies.
Dexter sees Charley's opportunity as a chance to reassess his life and reconcile the mistakes he's made. Or maybe he's just up for some fresh changes.
Charley rents a stunning multi-floored residence and as the two frenemies tour the place, she gives Dex the lowdown on Ray Ballard, the man called the Sleepy-Eyed Stranger. The basement of the place is only accessible via elevator (feels a bit dangerous, doesn't it?). It's also soundproof, making it the perfect kill room. But since there's no furnace, there's one more thing Dexter needs: A new boat to cruise the New York Harbor in!
As the episode comes to an end, we get our first glimpse of the Sleepy-Eyed Stranger (played by Gabriel Luna) as he lurks inside the home of his next victim. The next day, the Five Borough Killer calls the Homicide department with a very specific threat on Broadway. And as Dexter and Charley meet one last time to finalize the details for their new plan, a body drops from a rooftop, smashing into a news stand. Dex knows right away that it's "FBK" — and he promises to stop him before he can kill again.
