Mid-Century Modern Cancelled At Hulu: 'Ten Great Episodes... Not Enough,' EP Laments
The Desert Queens' stay in Palm Springs is coming to an abrupt end, with Hulu cancelling Mid-Century Modern after just one season, series creator Max Mutchnick announced Monday on Instagram.
"Ten great episodes... Not enough," he wrote. "But we loved making every single one of them. We're gonna miss our very special show. Thanks to everyone who watched."
Created by Mutchnick and David Kohan (Will & Grace), the sitcom starred Nathan Lane as Bunny Schneiderman, who invites his two best friends — Matt Bomer as flight attendant Jerry and Nathan Lee Graham as fashion snob Arthur — to live with him in Palm Springs, following the sudden death of their fourth friend. The catch? They're all sharing the home with Bunny's opinionated mother Sybil, played by the iconic Linda Lavin.
Lavin tragically died in December 2024, midway through production on the season, forcing the producers to pivot and write her death into the show. The process of writing Sybil's death, as well as the characters' response to it, is one Kohan described as "terrifying, just really, really terrifying."
"We so wanted to honor her in the way that she deserved to be honored, so the question was, well, are we up to the task?" Kohan told TVLine. "What do we have? Well, we have the truth. We have the person that we knew and we have the truth of her experience."
Pamela Adlon, who recurred in Season 1 as Bunny's sister Mindy, was expected to make more regular appearances in Season 2, filling the void left by Lavin.
"It was a happy accident that Mindy was written into the show," Mutchnick told TVLine. "Pamela Adlon is a friend and a brilliant actress and just a great sound for this show. We're hoping that, in the event we're lucky enough to come back, that she will come back with us."
