Exclusive NCIS: Origins Photos: Gibbs Faces The Music In Powerful Season Finale — Will Lala Have His Back?

It's "sink or swim" for the long-simmering Gibbs/Lala relationship, which will be put to the ultimate test in next week's NCIS: Origins Season 1 finale.

Ahead of tonight's episode airing on CBS at 10/9c, in which SAC Cliff Wheeler (played by Patrick Fischler) struggles to hold onto his job as new developments in the Sandman case come to light, TVLine has a pair of exclusive photos from the prequel spinoff's incredibly powerful freshman finale.

In the finale titled "Cecilia" — as in Special Agent Lala Dominguez's first name — Gibbs (played by Austin Stowell) faces a reckoning when the murder of Pedro Hernandez is revisited by a friend of Lala's, Military Police investigator Lara Macy (The Midnight Club's Claire Berger).

Who could possibly have tipped off Macy? And is there any way that Gibbs, Lala (Mariel Molino) or Franks (Kyle Schmid) can wave off the ambitious investigator, who sees this potentially explosive case as her ticket to an elusive JAG position?

Berger's Lara Macy is described as an investigator with sharp instincts and a relentless drive for justice, who isn't afraid to challenge the status quo (especially in a male-dominated world).

Indeed, Macy some 18 years later will hold the position of Special Agent in Charge at the Office of Special Projects in Los Angeles. The character was first introduced in the backdoor pilot for NCIS: Los Angeles, which aired as the NCIS Season 6 two-parter titled "Legend." Louise Lombard (CSI) played Macy in "Legend," but when NCIS: LA was ordered to series, she was replaced with Linda Hunt's Operations Manager Henrietta "Hetty" Lange.

Now, if you remember that NCIS two-parter... you may think you've been "spoiled" for the NCIS: Origins finale. But, having screened "Cecilia," believe me when I say that all these years we've been missing a critical piece of information. The pivotal episode fills in important blanks that recontextualize what we learned in "Legend" as well as shed new light on the "her" of NCIS: Origins — meaning, the woman that narrator Gibbs told us this story is about, in the series premiere.
