9-1-1 Trailer Offers Heartbreaking First Look At [Spoiler]'s Funeral: 'He's Not Supposed To Be Dead!'

Warning: Stop reading now if you aren't fully caught up on 9-1-1. Major spoilers are imminent.

While 9-1-1 fans struggle to process the jaw-dropping conclusion of Thursday's "Contagion" two-parter, ABC has released a trailer for the show's May 1 return (8/7c), giving us a first look at an event we hoped would never come.

I'm speaking, of course, about the funeral of Peter Krause's Captain Bobby Nash, who succumbed to a deadly virus in the final moments of this week's episode; Bobby concealed his infection until Chimney had been given the antidote, knowing he would never agree to taking the only sample.

"Nobody blames you," Buck tells Chimney in the trailer, to which Chimney replies, "I blame him. He gave his life so I could live, and I'm just not sure what I'm supposed to do with that."

We also get a taste of the emotional tidal wave heading for Athena. "He's not supposed to be dead!" she screams to Hen. "He just left... he left me."

And then there's the dramatic narration: "When a hero falls, can his world move on?" The fact that the trailer calls the episode "emotional" is also pretty telling. Every episode of this show is emotional, so to point it out means especially serious business.

In an interview with TVLine, showrunner Tim Minear explained that Bobby's death was "entirely a creative decision" on his part, not something Krause requested. He said Krause was "really professional" about his character's untimely demise, and he "understood that, for the health of the show and in order to give all of the characters more story, something like this needed to happen."

9-1-1 was recently renewed for Season 9, expected to premiere this fall on ABC. Another entry in the franchise — 9-1-1: Nashville, starring Chris O'Donnell and Jessica Capshaw — is also set to debut sometime in the 2025–2026 season.
