Psych's Running Pineapple Joke Came From An Improvised Line In The Pilot
There are pineapples carefully hidden across every episode of "Psych" and its three movies. These fruity Easter eggs were deliberately planted in the USA Network series, but the running gag started with an improvised line from star James Roday Rodriguez in the pilot episode.
There just so happened to be a prop pineapple on top of a fridge in the series premiere, which aired on July 7, 2006. Rodriguez, who played faux-psychic Shawn Spencer, noticed it during a scene where he enlists his best friend Burton "Gus" Guster (Dulé Hill) to help him solve a case. As a begrudging Gus gets ready to leave, Shawn picks up the pineapple and cheerfully asks "Should I slice this up for the road?"
"Every time he got to that pineapple part, he sold it in such a way that it was the most acting he did the entire day," "Psych" creator Steve Franks told Entertainment Weekly. "So, I felt the need to really put it in and it was so funny."
"From there, we had this whole runner about pineapples," Hill added in the EW interview. Praising his co-star's improvisational "brilliance," Hill said they felt a sense of freedom while making "Psych" that allowed "little things like that" to grow and become important parts of the series.
Spotting all the pineapples in Psych is a real challenge
Whether referenced in dialog or appearing as an actual fruit, a smoothie, a painting, or some sort of little pineapple tchotchke, the tropical plant makes dozens of appearances throughout the series. Some are obvious while others are quite subtle, and "Psych" fans made a game out of trying to find every single one.
Peacock released a video in 2020 collecting 170 pineapple appearances across the show's eight seasons and first "Psych" film, but even this official montage missed some of them. The "Psych" fan wiki has a more exhaustive, though not official, accounting of these many, many pineapples.
It's a lot of work for a running gag (to say nothing of how much effort the "Psych" production team must've put into getting new pineapples) and it's all because James Roday Rodriguez went off script.
