The People V. Gorilla Grodd Ordered At HBO Max: Full Cast Revealed For Superman Spin-Off Series

HBO Max is putting one of DC Comics' most infamous baddies back on trial. The streamer has given a straight-to-series order to "The People V. Gorilla Grodd," an eight-episode comedy series set in the current DC cinematic universe, TVLine has learned.

Skyler Gisondo, who debuted on the big screen in 2025's "Superman," will star as Jimmy Olsen, while Jimmy Tatro ("Home Economics") will be introduced as the telepathic ape Gorilla Grodd. Other Daily Planet staffers returning from the film include Beck Bennett as Steve Lombard, Mikaela Hoover as Cat Grant, and Wendell Pierce as Perry White.

Here's what to expect from the series, per the official logline: "A superintelligent ape is convicted of murdering his father, the King of Gorilla City. In an eight-part 'true' crime docuseries, the Daily Planet's Jimmy Olsen reopens the case, investigating whether Gorilla Grodd was wrongly convicted in one of Metropolis' most famous murder trials."

From DC Studios in association with Warner Bros. Television, "The People V. Gorilla Grodd" also stars Mary Holland, Eduardo Franco, Arian Moayed, Dan Perrault, Andrew Leeds, and Tim Baltz in yet-undisclosed roles.

Writers Tony Yacenda and Dan Perrault will serve as showrunners, executive-producing alongside James Gunn and Peter Safran. Yacenda is also directing all eight episodes.

The People V. Gorilla Grodd will take fans down the 'darker and funnier streets and alleyways of the DCU'

In a statement, co-showrunner Tony Yacenda says "The People V. Gorilla Grodd" will feel "less like an entry into the DCU and more like an artifact from it — a Daily Planet original documentary made for the people of Metropolis." Yacenda hopes that the series will "appeal to fans of the comics, comedy and true crime," adding, "and while we can't speak for audiences here yet, we already know it's a huge hit in Metropolis. They love this series."

"Between Skyler [Gisondo]'s wonderful performance and the fantastic chemistry of the Daily Planet cast, we knew coming out of 'Superman' that this would be a fun world to explore," add James Gunn and Peter Safran, DC Studios' Co-Chairmen and Co-CEOS. "We're excited to work with the brilliant Dan Perrault and Tony Yacenda to take the audience down some of the darker and funnier streets and alleyways of the DCU as Jimmy spotlights the Metropolis criminal justice system for his docuseries."

A premiere date for "The People V. Gorilla Grodd" is not yet known. The next big screen "Superman" installment, titled "Man of Tomorrow," hits theaters on July 9, 2027.
