Why Jacob Merrick From Reacher Looks So Familiar

The first three episodes of "Reacher" Season 4 all dropped on Amazon Prime Video on August 12, 2026. By the end of the third one, the titular character has two new sidekicks, one of whom seems a bit out of his depth. Jacob Merrick is a New Jersey police officer whose sister dies in mysterious circumstances. Devastated, he heads to Philadelphia to try and uncover the truth about what happened to her. For "Reacher" fans wondering why Merrick seems so familiar, it's because his actor, Christopher Rodriguez Marquette, has racked up a long list of TV guest roles over the years, appearing in both comedy and gritty drama series.

You might remember Marquette for his role as Barry's doomed army friend Chris Lucado in Season 1 of "Barry," or for his three-episode stint as Ridge in the 2020 TV remake of "The Fugitive," for example. Looking further back in Marquette's career, you may recognize him from his breakout role as Lu Delgado's (Rosa Blasi) son Marc in the Lifetime medical drama series "Strong Medicine," on which he grew from a tween into a young man. Or perhaps you know him from "Joan of Arcadia," a hit 2000s show that nobody really talks about today. Marquette appeared as Joan's love interest Adam Rove in 44 episodes of the CBS fantasy drama between 2003 and 2005.

Christopher Rodriguez Marquette wasn't supposed to play Jacob Merrick — the role of Reacher's cop sidekick was originally given to Jay Baruchel, who had to drop out for personal reasons. The recasting represented a big opportunity for Marquette, as "Reacher" is his most high-profile project in years. In a candid 2020 interview with Starry Mag, the Florida native talked about his career as a jobbing character actor who flits between comedy and drama projects based on whatever roles happen to come along. "I've been acting my whole life now and having a lifetime as an actor, your career changes all the time," he said. "It doesn't ever really stay in one place. I've never reached that threshold where some actors do."

Being able to casually pick and choose parts like established stars often do is not a luxury that actors like Marquette have. They have to endlessly audition for guest roles, knowing full well that they'll be back to square one as soon as they're done with the job. In Marquette's case, he tries out for roles based on whether or not he thinks he would enjoy the show in question. "The only thing I've ever gone by is throwing my hat into the ring for any opportunity I've been given and getting energetic and excited about projects that I want to watch," he said. Marquette's other notable TV credits include "Weeds," "Criminal Minds," "House M.D.," "Mozart in the Jungle," "Lucifer," and the "Magnum P.I." reboot, which ran for five seasons.
