The Simpsons Drops Twisted Trailer For 'Yellow Mirror' Episode On Disney+ (Exclusive)
"The Simpsons" is getting a jump on Halloween this year with "Yellow Mirror," a new episode premiering August 26 on Disney+. TVLine has your exclusive first look at the show's kick-off to spooky season, and as Bart reminds us in the trailer above, "anything can happen in the 'Yellow Mirror.'"
In a nod to "Black Mirror," the Simpsons will "struggle to find the light through two dark tales of the curious and bizarre," according to the streamer's official synopsis. In the first story, "a defective lamp reveals a heartbreaking truth about what Homer believes is reality," and in the second, "an AI-powered tablet befriends and controls Maggie."
The trailer reveals more of what we can expect, including a flashback to Homer's days as a student at Springfield High School. When a teenage Homer tells Barney that life as he knew it never existed, he receives a very Barney response: "Well, that sucks. On the bright side, it's fishstick Friday."
We also see how technology turns on the residents of Springfield, with a villainous AI named Hailey announcing, "Hello, humans. Why don't we settle down and use our incarcerated voices, OK?" And it all begins with Marge innocently using a tablet to keep Maggie entertained during a night out with the family. Or as Homer puts it, "You found the baby's off switch!"
What to expect from The Simpsons' Disney+ special
TVLine can also exclusively reveal the key art for "Yellow Mirror," which offers more clues about what fans can expect from the Disney+ special. Check it out below:
The key art pieces together several shattered moments from "Yellow Mirror," including Homer sketching out a memory of his "non-existent" family; Maggie cozying up to Hailey, the evil AI; a grizzled Homer fielding questions from reporters at some sort of press conference; teenage Homer and Marge interacting at Springfield High School; and a pair of robot dogs — and they're definitely not the man's-best-friend type.
It's worth noting that "Yellow Mirror" is not replacing the show's annual "Treehouse of Horror" episode. That's still set to air on Fox this fall as part of "The Simpsons" Season 38, though a specific airdate has not yet been announced. The new season kicks off on Sunday, September 27 (8/7c).
