Casting News: Blue Bloods' Tom Selleck Plots TV Return, Sam Waterston Is Line Of Fire POTUS, And More

Nearly two years after signing off as NYPD Commissioner Frank Reagan, Tom Selleck is returning to the small screen.

The "Blue Bloods" vet is set to guest-star in Apple TV's as-yet-untitled comedy series led by Elizabeth Banks, Deadline reports — a role that will also reunite him with "Three Men and a Baby" co-star Ted Danson, who plays Banks' character's father. Character details are being kept under wraps.

Banks stars as Heidi, a recent divorcée who "sets out to secure a lively second act for herself and her kids," the official logline reads. "But when she stumbles into coordinating her father's retirement community sex dates, Heidi is forced into an unlikely alliance with his girlfriend's perpetually single son."

The new comedy was created by Liz Heldens ("Will Trent") and Matt Ward ("Madam Secretary"), and also stars Rob Delaney, Katey Sagal, Jared Goldstein, and Spencer Moss, with Hamish Linklater, Michelle Buteau, and Simu Liu in recurring roles.

• "Line of Fire" has elected not one, but two presidents — including a familiar face from "Law & Order": On NBC's upcoming Peter Krause drama — which centers on a family of law enforcement agents, including members of the Secret Service — Sam Waterston will play former President Thomas Barnes. According to Deadline, Barnes and Krause's Mike "have a deep bond, but Mike is haunted by a close call from his time on detail." Additionally, Chris Chalk — who appeared opposite Waterston on "The Newsroom," and more recently co-starred on HBO's "IT: Welcome to Derry" — will play current President Kayana, while Campbell Scott ("Furious") will recur as Terry, a U.S. senator and boyfriend of Hope Davis' Jane.
• HBO's "Rooster" has promoted Maximo Salas (Tommy), Annie Mumolo (Cristle), and Rory Scovel (Officer Donnie Mullins) to series-regular status for Season 2, Deadline reports.
• HBO's "The Trial of Louise Woodward" has cast Catriona Chandler ("Rivals") in the titular role, Deadline reports, while Joanne Froggatt ("Downton Abbey") will play Louise's mother, Susan. They join the previously cast Meghann Fahy ("The White Lotus") and Sagar Radia ("Industry") as Deborah and Sunil Eappen, parents of victim Matthew Eappen.
• BritBox's 10-part mystery drama "The Detection Club" has cast Miles Jupp ("Belgravia: The Next Chapter") as G.K. Chesterton, Bryony Hannah ("Call the Midwife") as Agatha Christie, Cara Theobold ("Downton Abbey") as Dorothy L. Sayers, and Viraj Juneja ("Little English") as D.I. Greenway. Set in 1930s London, the series "follows the legendary crime writers as they hone their craft within the hallowed walls of a secret London location," according to the official logline. "After receiving an invitation that leads them to their first real murder case, our famous trio work together to solve a series of exciting mysteries."
• Fox News has added Emily Compagno as a full-time co-host to "The Five," alongside Greg Gutfeld, Dana Perino, Jesse Watters, and rotating liberal co-hosts Harold Ford Jr. and Jessica Tarlov. Her new role begins Tuesday, September 8.
