Futurama Ending With Season 14 On Hulu, But Creator Matt Groening Is Confident: 'We Will Rise Again'

Get ready to say goodbye to "Futurama." Again. Hulu has no plans to order additional seasons of Matt Groening's animated series after the Season 14 finale, which is now available to stream.

"The thing about 'Is Futurama coming to an end?' Well, we've come to an end many times before," Groening tells Variety. "We make a joke about it with the season finale. It's redundantly, fatalistically titled. I think we have a whistling-past-the-graveyard attitude these days because we've been in this situation many times before. We have lots more stories to tell. The animators and the actors and the writers all would love to do more stories and we'll see. You never know."

Indeed, the season finale is titled "Final Ending: The Last Conclusion," which should serve as a pretty fitting series finale title if "Futurama" remains in the grave — and Groening isn't confident that will be the case.

"They can put us in a coffin, they can nail the lid shut, but they can't bury us," Groening says. "We will rise again. I guess I'm not too worried."

To Groening's credit, this isn't the first time "Futurama" has found itself in this position. The show originally aired for five seasons on Fox (1999–2003) before being canceled for the first time. Comedy Central revived the series in 2009, carrying it through Season 10, before canceling it again in 2013. It would be another decade before Hulu would revive "Futurama" a second time, where it streamed for four more seasons.

Although Hulu is not currently planning to order additional seasons of "Futurama," fans of the sci-fi cartoon won't go completely hungry. Three "supersized" specials are still set to stream, beginning with a Christmas-themed installment — featuring the return of everyone's favorite Robot Santa — in 2027.

Groening is remaining mum about the other two specials, but he does offer this tantalizing tease that should get fans very excited: "We've been on the air forever, since 1999, so there's more to the overall arc of the story of the characters," he tells Variety. "Stuff that we have hinted at from the very beginning is finally paid off, and some unanswered questions for true fans will finally be answered. But I can't really be more specific."
