Kelli Giddish Guest-Starred On Law & Order: SVU Years Before Joining As A Regular
Having played Detective Amanda Rollins for 15 years now, Kelli Giddish remains one of the most recognizable "Law & Order: Special Victims Unit" faces. Yet she started her journey on the show as a character on a different side of the legal process.
Going back to 2007, four years before Giddish made her debut as Rollins, the actress guest-starred on "Law & Order: SVU" Season 8, Episode 12. The installment, titled "Outsider," featured Giddish as Kara Bawson, a sexual assault survivor. Detectives Fin Tutuola (Ice-T) and Chester Lake (Adam Beach) work together on a college campus rape case, which leads them to investigate a similar incident involving Kara. Tutuola and Kara share an emotional scene as Giddish's character recounts her rape. Kara's help contributes to the SVU's arrest of a serial rapist named Henry Chanoor (Kal Penn).
Following her single-episode appearance on "Law & Order: SVU," Giddish portrayed Rollins as a series regular from Season 13 to Season 24 — during which she was written out of the NBC police procedural. But that didn't mark the end of Giddish's "Law & Order: SVU" tenure, as high demand from both fans and the show's cast brought her back to the role on numerous occasions. More recently, Giddish regained her status as a "Law & Order: SVU" regular beginning in Season 27.
Kelli Giddish shared a bond with Ice-T after her Law & Order: SVU debut
While Kelli Giddish hasn't publicly commented on her guest role as Kara Bawson in "Law & Order: SVU" Season 8, the star has offered some insight into the working relationship she has built with Ice-T while playing Amanda Rollins. Given that the two actors briefly shared the screen before that, their first interaction as fellow main cast members is all the more wholesome.
In a 2026 interview with People, Giddish shared the story of when she arrived to film "Law & Order: SVU" Season 13 fresh off of shooting a scene for "The Good Wife" in which her hair was tinged with fake blood. She recalled, "I show up to 'SVU' and they're like, 'Your hair is still pink.' And I'm like, 'Sorry. Think we can just put it up?'"
Describing greeting Ice-T and showing him her hair, Giddish recalled, "I was like, 'Hey, how are you? I thought I'd do this.' And he goes, 'You do you, boo.' And I go, 'Awesome. Love it.' That relationship was set in stone right there: mutual respect and love." Working on more than 200 episodes together over the years, Giddish and Ice-T have come a long way as co-stars since their early meetings on the set of "Law & Order: SVU."
