A Cult-Favorite Sci-Fi Horror Series Perfect For Halloween Is Now Streaming On Netflix
Netflix subscribers looking for a fantastic horror TV binge for Halloween can now enjoy one of the genre's best yet least appreciated shows in recent memory. The MGM+ original series "From" premiered in 2022 and has become a cult favorite thanks to its compelling mystery box-style plot that combines sci-fi and horror.
In "From," a number of people find themselves inexplicably trapped in a mysterious town surrounded by frightening humanoid monsters. Although "From" takes time to unravel its many fascinating secrets, the show has thrilled audiences through its terrifying supernatural creatures and interesting characters, such as Harold Perrineau's Sheriff Boyd Stevens, Elizabeth Saunders' Donna Raines, and the various members of the Matthews family.
"From" often feels reminiscent of well-known projects like the M. Night Shyamalan horror film "The Village" and the sci-fi mystery series "Lost," but it hasn't achieved mainstream popularity. This could be explained by its home on the lower-level streaming service MGM+, so perhaps the arrival of "From" on Netflix will introduce a lot more viewers to this engrossing horror tale. Having aired Season 4 earlier this year, "From" averages a 96% critic score on Rotten Tomatoes. Only the first three seasons are currently available on Netflix, but that could change in the future. In other news, MGM+ has renewed "From" for a 5th and final season, which is set to premiere in 2027.
From was inspired by a devastating real-life event
The suspense of "From" keeps audiences theorizing about how the characters ended up in the town, who the monsters are, and how the survivors might find their way out. With most of the biggest questions left unanswered after "From" Season 4, viewers have more than enough reasons to watch until the end.
As for what inspired such an unnerving and mystifying TV show, series creator John Griffin revealed that 9/11 made him ponder human existence and identity in response to tragedy, leading to the concept of "From." Griffin told TV Goodness in 2022, "That was the first time, for me, that I realized that there is no permanence to the world that we live in. ... I remember in the aftermath, people, myself included, were looking around, walking around, [asking], 'Well, what does everything mean now? What do I do?' And later on, looking back on that experience, I realized that, like so many other people, I had yet to go on that journey of self-discovery that would've allowed me to say, even in the absence of all that, even as the world falls apart, 'This is still who I am.'"
As Halloween draws near and 2026 winds down, it's a great time to start streaming the first three seasons of "From" on Netflix before the gripping series comes to an end next year.
