Zoe Saldaña's film career began in 2000 with the release of "Center Stage," the cult classic dance movie she starred in alongside Amanda Schull and Peter Gallagher. But as for her TV career start, like other major movie stars, "Law & Order" is where Saldaña first began popping up on the small screen. Saldaña's TV debut was in 1999 on the original "Law & Order." Five years later, her second TV role was on a 2004 episode of the spin-off "Law & Order: Special Victims Unit." Saldaña plays Gabrielle Vega on "SVU" Season 5 Episode 21, "Criminal." Gabrielle is the daughter of Javier Vega (James McDaniel), a former drug addict and criminology professor at Wallace University who turned his life around after serving time for murder.

Gabrielle is a law student at the school where Javier works, and she tells Olivia (Mariska Hargitay) and Elliot (Christopher Meloni) that it was learning about her that made her father change his ways. Javier becomes the primary suspect in the murder of a graduate student, Rebecca Wheeler, whom he mentored, especially once the detectives learn they were dating. Captain Don Cragen (Dann Florek) targets Javier because he worked on his previous murder case and doesn't believe Javier has changed. Cragen gets Javier held on charges, but fingerprint evidence leads detectives to another suspect, Kyle Lurhmann (Joe Towne).

Javier is released, and charges are dropped, but not before he relapses. At her father's hearing,  Gabrielle tells Cragen they're suing him for personal damages. Later, when the team figures out that Javier kidnapped Kyle to avenge Rebecca's death, Kyle confesses to Rebecca's murder while Javier has him at gunpoint. Then, Cragen convinces him to drop the gun to prove he's changed.

SVU had bigger plans for Gabrielle Vega that never materialized

Years before Zoe Saldaña became the highest-grossing actor of all time (thanks to the $1.49 billion grossed by "Avatar: Fire & Ash" in 2025), her early TV roles were an indication that she was going to be a major star. The undeniable spark in her performance as Gabrielle Vega landed her on TVLine's list of the 15 best guest stars on "Law & Order: SVU." In 2014, a decade after her appearance on the show, "SVU" casting director Jonathan Strauss told BuzzFeed that, based on her amazing performance, he had hoped she could make a return to the show, but her star was rising too fast for the team to make it happen.

"It's no secret now, but there's no one like her, and there really was no one like her 10 years ago," Strauss noted. "At the time, my not-so-secret mission was to implant characters on the show who could become something more. In this case, her character was in law school, and my hope was she could turn into an assistant district attorney." Sadly, when the timeline made sense for Gabrielle to become an assistant district attorney in New York, Saldaña's schedule was too packed to reprise the role. It's interesting to think about the directions the "Lioness" star could've taken "SVU," but neither the show's crew nor Saldaña has much time to wonder about that.
