Lioness Star Zoe Saldaña's Acting Debut Was On One Of The Most Popular Procedurals Ever

Before starring in the gripping Paramount+ series "Lioness," Zoe Saldaña plied her trade in plenty of big movie franchises, most notably "Avatar," "Star Trek," and "Guardians of the Galaxy." However, her acting debut was a small part on one of the most popular procedurals of all time: Before Saldaña was a major film and TV star, she kicked off her career with a guest role on "Law & Order."

Saldaña appeared in a 1999 "Law & Order" episode titled "Refuge: Part 2," which centers on a series of crimes involving the Russian mob. The New Jersey native played a character named Belinca, who delivers the detectives up a crucial lead. They're looking for the man who has been beating her pregnant sister, and she's perfectly happy to help them by pointing him out on the street if it means he won't be able to hurt her anymore.

A few years later, after beefing up her acting resume with roles in the likes of "Get Over It," "Crossroads," and "Drumline," Saldaña returned to the "Law & Order" universe for an episode of "Special Victims Unit." She appeared in the Season 5 episode "Criminal" as Gabrielle Vega, the daughter of a drug addict who was framed for the murder of a young woman many years prior.

Zoe Saldaña is one of several major movie stars who used "Law & Order" as a launchpad. Speaking to Elle, she explained how working on the procedural made her realize that she could make acting an actual career. "That was the very first time I did something that my entire family, living in the States and worldwide, was able to watch," she said. "I remember that day that I shot that scene, I had so much fun on set, and I thought, 'I can get used to this, this is something I can maybe do as a career.'"

Saldaña's first big movie role was Anamaria in 2003's "Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl," a huge blockbuster hit. Landing a role in a big budget Disney movie is a dream come true for any up-and-coming actor, though the experience was actually a nightmare for Saldaña. In fact, it almost made her change her mind about acting. "'Pirates' was just too big of a production," she admitted to InStyle. "I just felt lost and not considered properly and overlooked. I remember thinking, 'If this is Hollywood, then I hate it. I don't want it. Take it, keep it.'"

So what happened to change her mind? It turns out we have Steven Spielberg to thank for Zoe Saldaña remaining in Tinseltown. The veteran filmmaker directed Saldaña in her next film, 2004's "The Terminal," and he advised her to be more selective with her roles if she didn't want to fall out of love with acting. Today, she's Hollywood royalty – Saldaña became the highest-grossing actor of all time in 2026 thanks to the success of "Avatar: Fire and Ash."
