Mariska Hargitay Explains Why Kate Moss Turned Down A Law & Order: SVU Speaking Role
When an A-list celebrity wants to make a guest-starring appearance on "Law & Order: Special Victims Unit," you might assume they want a meaty guest role packed with a lot of action and scene-chewing dialogue. But when drop-dead gorgeous supermodel Kate Moss once expressed interest in appearing on the crime series, it seems she was only interested in dropping dead.
During a recent appearance on "Jimmy Kimmel Live!," 2026 Primetime Emmy Awards host and "Law & Order: SVU" mainstay Mariska Hargitay opened up about the time Moss pitched herself for a spot on the long-running NBC police procedural. Of course, the show's team jumped at the idea of booking one of fashion's most iconic faces and quickly cooked up an attractive role that would best suit her.
"Kate Moss wanted to do the show, and I was like, 'I'm sorry — biggest supermodel in the world. What? Yes!'" Hargitay told Kimmel. "... I went to the producers and I told them about it, and we wrote her a part of a madam. And then she says, 'No, no, no. I don't want any lines. I just wanna be a dead body.' And I went, 'Oh, it's like that,' and that's what it's like — people don't sometimes want a part. They just want to be an iconic dead body."
Requests from celebrities to play dead bodies on SVU are 'nonstop'
As it turns out, turning down a speaking gig to lie motionless on an autopsy table isn't as rare as fans might think. Mariska Hargitay told Jimmy Kimmel that Hollywood heavyweights asking to play corpses on the show is "nonstop." She added, "These are superstars. ... I'm always so flattered. It's a thing that people want to play dead bodies on the show."
Over its 27 seasons, "SVU" has had plenty of big names grace the screen long after becoming famous, such as Whoopi Goldberg, Martin Short, and Snoop Dogg, to name a few. But there was one musician in particular who fulfilled his dream of playing a stiff on the show. In 2013, The Roots drummer Questlove told Us Weekly that it was his "fantasy to play a dead body on 'Law & Order.'" Then, in the 2014 "SVU" episode "Criminal Stories" — which marked Hargitay's directorial debut — the "Tonight Show" drummer got to play dead as a gunshot victim in a morgue scene alongside Ice-T's Detective Odafin "Fin" Tutuola.
