How Tracker Plans To Address One Of Its Biggest Unsolved Mysteries In Season 4

"Tracker" is finally ready to dig into the mystery surrounding Mel's mother.

Newly promoted series regular Cassady McClincy Zhang made her debut as Reenie's new assistant, Melanie "Mel" Day, in Season 3, Episode 3. During her job interview, Mel revealed that her mother, an Army logistics officer, was found shot to death in her car at a rest stop when Mel was 16. Her killer was never found — and Mel's frustration with the systems that failed to deliver answers or justice helped explain her aversion to bureaucracy.

At the time, TVLine wondered whether Mel's tragic backstory was setting up another cold case for Colter to eventually solve. When we put that question to showrunner Elwood Reid midway through Season 3, he was hesitant to confirm that was the plan, while also acknowledging that viewers had already developed some very different theories about Reenie's latest hire.

"A lot of people assumed she was a mole or part of something dirty, which is honestly a great f–king idea. I should steal that," Reid joked at the time. "But really, we were looking for a different vibe in the office. She's eager, a little quirky, but she has this pain you don't immediately see. And if you think about what happened to Colter [with his father], they share something very real."

At that point, Mel and Colter had yet to meet face-to-face, though Reid indicated that bringing them together was in the works. "We're still figuring out how — whether she opens up to him, or he intuits something and offers help," he said. "We want to let that play out slowly because it gives both actors something really juicy to play over multiple episodes."

But Season 3 came and went without Mel and Colter ever actually meeting. Now, as the CBS procedural heads into Season 4, that introduction — and the unresolved mystery surrounding Mel's mother — remain on the table.

In anticipation of the Season 4 premiere (airing Sunday, October 4, at 9:30/8:30c), TVLine followed up with Reid about the dangling Mel storyline — and this time, he was considerably more forthcoming.

"We're going to go there," the EP confirmed. "So we're building that story." What's more, "knock wood, that could potentially be a good story for Russell to come and get involved in."

Reid stressed that the storyline is still being worked out, including whether Jensen Ackles' schedule will allow Colter's brother to factor into it. But expanding Mel's story is part of a larger Season 4 effort to flesh out the characters surrounding Colter.

"When you move into later seasons of a show, people view this as a family," Reid explained. "So you want to unwind more of these characters, personalize a little bit more. Not in a soapy, cheesy way, but in a way that can, I think, serve the kind of stories that 'Tracker' does."

The potential Russell connection is especially intriguing given that Ackles is already confirmed to return in Episode 5 — and it doesn't sound like that hour will involve Mel. Reid told TVLine that he hopes to bring Ackles back for an extended block of episodes later in Season 4 — but since we had his ear, the "Vought Rising" star has been cast in a new serial killer drama for MGM+, potentially making scheduling even trickier.

So whether Mel's mother's cold case ultimately provides the reason for another Russell return remains to be seen... but after first planting the seed in Season 3, it sure sounds like "Tracker" will finally address the mystery in Season 4. Would you like to see it resolved?
