How Marshals Got Justice For Riley Green's Garrett In Season 2 Premiere: 'We Wanted To Connect Everything Back,' EP Says
From the moment Kayce came face to face with Tom Weaver in the "Marshals" Season 2 premiere, it was pure chaos, a thrilling pursuit that ultimately ended with Dolly's death and Tom's incarceration.
The premiere was so chaotic, in fact, that you might have missed one of its more subtle reveals — that Tom's foreman Jeb was responsible for starting the barn fire that killed Garrett (Riley Green) last season. Many viewers probably already suspected that the Weavers were somehow behind the fatal blaze, but now we can officially call that mystery solved.
"I wanted to connect everything back to Garrett, as well just to show how terrible these people are," showrunner Spencer Hudnut tells TVLine. "Tom Weaver was really the show's Big Bad, starting from Episode 4 last season; we're uncovering that he actually did a lot of that stuff."
Already established as a country music star, Green made his acting debut in the first season of "Marshals," recurring in four episodes as Garrett Garvey, a former Navy SEAL who served alongside Kayce and Cal. Though his time on the "Yellowstone" spin-off was brief, Garrett left his mark on Montana, from healing old wounds between Kayce and Cal, to showing Andrea just how much fun she can really have out west — even if only for one night. Green returned to TV this fall as a first-time coach on Season 30 of "The Voice."
Kayce's fatal face-off with Jeb is a 'powerful' moment for Garrett's memory — and Tate's future
When Kayce hunted down Jeb in the "Marshals" premiere, eventually bludgeoning him to death with a rock and dumping his body the river, he did it to save his son, not learning until later that the same man was also responsible for Garrett's death. (Talk about a two-for-one deal!)
"That moment of Kayce coming across Jeb trying to kill his son, and then Kayce turning the tables on him, is a very powerful one," Spencer Hudnut tells TVLine. "It's a haunting image that's going to stick with Kayce this season. By the end of the first episode, you really get that sense of Kayce's concern, not only for all that Tate has endured, but also — this kid is graduating from high school this season, he's turning 18, and he's about to go out into the world. What kind of Dutton man is Kayce releasing into the world, and has he messed this kid up so much that Tate is going to follow in his footsteps?"
OK, let's talk: Were you surprised to learn that Jeb caused the fire that killed Garrett, or had you already figured that out? And how did you feel about the Season 2 premiere overall? Grade it in our poll below, then drop a comment with your full review.
