Mark Hamill made "Criminal Minds" history when he portrayed the twisted serial killer known as the Replicator. The Replicator is featured in "Criminal Minds" Season 8 as an unseen perpetrator whose murders echo the styles of criminals specifically apprehended by the Behavioral Analysis Unit. The Replicator does not appear in person until the Season 8 finale reveals the shadowy murderer to be Mark Hamill's John Curtis, an FBI agent who previously worked with BAU members Erin Strauss (Jayne Atkinson) and Alex Blake (Jeanne Tripplehorn). Curtis' long-nursed animosity towards his two former partners propel him to attract their attention by replicating BAU-investigated murders, and he successfully takes the life of Strauss before meeting his end in a showdown with the BAU team.

Mark Hamill's performance as the Replicator was hailed as one of the standout elements in the "Criminal Minds" Season 8 finale. His character's murder of Erin Strauss wrote off a character who had routinely appeared on the series since Season 2, leaving a devastating mark on the BAU that forever distinguished the Replicator on their expansive list of adversaries. Although many perceptive "Criminal Minds" viewers had predicted Hamill's portrayal of the Replicator the moment his casting as an anonymous character was announced, many fans still regard the season-long buildup to his reveal to be a reflection of the show at its very best.

Mark Hamill's daughter encouraged him to take the part

If it hadn't been for his daughter, Chelsea, Mark Hamill might never have stepped onto the "Criminal Minds" set. "She said that I didn't even need to take [a] meeting; I should just say yes right away over the phone," Hamill reportedly told Buzzfeed in a 2013 interview regarding his initial acceptance of the role. Although his daughter's encouragement might have motivated his "Criminal Minds" appearance, Hamill revealed that the CBS crime drama had caught his eye long before he was offered the part of the Replicator. "Usually you don't have an arc like this where they set up something over a period of many, many episodes," Hamill further explained, reflecting on his storied history as a television actor. "As soon as I started watching these episodes, I said, 'Oh, I gotta do this!'"

Mark Hamill's acting resume encompasses a lengthy list of impressive villains, from the Replicator to the iconic Joker of "Batman: The Animated Series." Although the Luke Skywalker actor has certainly displayed a penchant for antagonists in the decades since "Star Wars," Hamill notes that his passion for a role is ignited first and foremost by good writing — a crucial factor that indeed first lured him towards "Criminal Minds." "Everything comes from the script," Hamill told Scary Mommy in a 2025 interview. "That's that old saying, 'If it ain't on the page, it ain't on the stage.' So, you read the script and you say, 'What can I do?' or 'What do I need to do to maximize the impact of the story?'"
