Will Dutton Ranch And Marshals Season 2 Have A Crossover? Yellowstone Spin-Off Showrunner Responds
For as long as the two "Yellowstone" spin-offs have existed, fans have demanded a crossover between CBS' "Marshals" and Paramount+'s "Dutton Ranch." While that wish has yet to be granted, it sounds like it's not a matter of if, but when the two shows will eventually collide on screen.
"We've definitely talked about it for as long as I've been part of this show," "Marshals" showrunner Spencer Hudnut tells TVLine. "I think it's a goal."
Despite both spin-offs being infused with Dutton DNA, they're very different shows. "Marshals" is a procedural about an elite unit led by Kayce Dutton (Luke Grimes) in Montana, while the Texas-set "Dutton Ranch," which stars Kelly Reilly and Cole Hauser as Beth Dutton and Rip Wheeler, is more of a traditional serialized drama akin to "Yellowstone." Additionally, "Marshals" adheres to the traditional broadcast TV timeline, whereas "Dutton Ranch" operates as a streaming show, producing and releasing seasons whenever scheduling allows. Still, Hudnut believes that a crossover would not only be possible, but also beneficial to the characters.
"We certainly would love to see Kayce and his sister reunited, whether it's in Texas or in Montana," Hudnut says. "I think the audience deserves that, and I also think it would be super healthy for Kayce to be reminded that he does still have some family out there."
In fact, there's only one word standing in the way of "Dutton Ranch" and "Marshals" setting an official crossover: "logistics."
"The reality of how we pull it off is a larger question that needs to be answered," Hudnut says. "The the logistics of that are ... we're in the middle of shooting, and they just started writing their second season. So that might be a little bit down the road."
One Yellowstone favorite is already crossing over to Marshals
While "Yellowstone" fans wait (patiently or otherwise) for a crossover between "Dutton Ranch" and "Marshals," they'll have to settle for occasionally seeing beloved characters from the original series pop up in the spin-offs.
As TVLine previously reported, the second season of "Marshals" will welcome back Jefferson White as beloved "Yellowstone" ranch hand Jimmy Hurdstrom, who appeared in more than 40 episodes across all fives seasons of the original Paramount Network drama.
"I'm thrilled to dive into the world of 'Marshals' and continue exploring the American West," White says. "The cast and crew are stacked full of my favorite actors and filmmakers, and I'm honored to join them. Jimmy and I have been through a lot together, and I can't wait to see what's next for us."
To be fair, many of the series regulars from "Yellowstone" are still appearing as their characters. Luke Grimes, Brecken Merrill, Mo Brings Plenty, and Gil Birmingham are all on "Marshals"; while Kelly Reilly, Cole Hauser, and Finn Little are holding things down on "Dutton Ranch."
